Louisiana has been struck by what is likely the worst U.S. disaster we’ve
seen since Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Historic flooding continues to submerge
vast swaths of southern Louisiana, trapping thousands in their homes,
requiring water rescues of over 20,000 people and forcing more than 10,000
people into shelters. So far, seven people have lost their lives.
We are anticipating more than 10,000 homes destroyed or heavily damaged,
impacting at least 40,000 people, and we expect to be conducting active
relief operations in Louisiana for at least 6-8 weeks.
You can help children and families in Louisiana who have lost everything by
making a donation to Red Cross Disaster Relief right now.
More than 500 disaster volunteers from all over the country are on their way
to help in Louisiana. The Red Cross has also mobilized 60 disaster response
vehicles, 40,000 ready-to-eat meals and more than two dozen trailer loads
of shelter and kitchen supplies.
Here in Eastern North Carolina, 15 of the area’s Red Cross specially
trained and experienced volunteers/staff will join this large scale disaster
response by Wednesday. And an additional five volunteers will work from
their homes, deploying virtually to guide families in getting Red Cross
assistance by completing casework over the phone.
