nearly impossible given the lack of technological advancement in the
foreseeable future. Then inflate. But deliberate inflation will be deemed as
default in slow motion by other countries and investors, that will deal a
fatal blow to US credit. Raising minimal wage will be a very subtle and
sneaky way to increase inflation.
Dude, look up trickle-up. Anyone who believe in trickle-down will keep
trickle-up in mind. It's two sides of same coin.
If you hand out $1mill to everyone as an extreme case, that will trigger
dramatic massive inflation, which is not good:
- for US credit,
- and too much shock to the economy.
But $15/hour is a mild stimulus to introduce inflation and break vicious
cycle. Some low skill worker will get laid off. But most of the shock can be
simply absorbed by raising prices of product, especially this is blanket
shock to everyone.

board is a way to "shock" the dying economy, introduce mild inflation and
encourage investment activity (which may or may not eventually lead to great
innovation and lead to real growth). Also, keep in mind: this increase of
cost is really flat as a whole. The nominal increase of cost is really
offset by the nominal gain for income. But the goal here is NOT to create
wealth directly. The goal is to shock and trickle up.
Detroit is different. Increasing the cost of car making in US is not a "
cross board" cost increase. Because automobile is "exportable". There are
alternative cars from other countries. But, most of the minimal wage jobs
are not "exportable", such as McDonald's. Demand of McDonald's, or fast food
, is inelastic, and recession-proof from a different perspective (look at
the McDonald's stock performance throughout the crisis). Therefore, an
inflation can force through, and trickle up.
If the demand is inelastic, then supply side will adjust the price of the
goods to reflect the increase of cross-board cost, as opposed to layoff.
One major reason of US pushing for human rights at developing countries is
US wants other countries to increase their standard of living, which
translates to increase of cost, which will make the competing ground more
even from America's perspective. I think this is a legitimate idea, after
all, human being should not race to bottom. It's better to raise the living
standard for everyone, v.s. Lowering living standard. Of course, Detroit has
a lot of pension/benefits reform to do, but that's another issue to address
in parallel.
Capitalism/free market is the best model as far in human history, but we
still need government to make certain policies to ensure a few things,
including avoiding race-to-bottom, and of course many other things like
military.
