An Irvington employee contends in a lawsuit that Township Mayor Tony
Vauss forced her to have sex with him last June in a municipal office.
The employee claims she told Vauss “no” twice, but he wedged her
against a desk and performed the sex act, according to a lawsuit she filed
last month against Vauss and the township.
She alleges the sex act was part of an ongoing pattern of “sexual
harassment” by Vauss, the lawsuit states. She claims the harassment
occurred before and after Vauss was elected mayor in May.
Paul Castronovo, the attorney representing the plaintiff, declined to
comment on the case and whether she has pursued criminal charges against
Vauss.
Stephanie Bush-Baskette, an aide to the mayor, said township officials
declined to comment on the lawsuit. She said that “because this is a matter
that’s under investigation as well as an issue of litigation, we don’t
have any comment at this time.”
Bush-Baskette declined to elaborate on her statement that the matter was
“under investigation.”
Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s
Office, declined to comment on the case when asked whether the employee had
reported her allegations to the office and whether the office investigated
those claims.
The lawsuit was filed on Oct. 20 in New Jersey Superior Court in Essex
County.
