Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has unexpectedly announced he is retiring within
a year. The blogosphere is abuzz but here is some analysis from Therese
Poletti at MarketWatch:
Microsoft Corp. is going to have a tough time finding the right leader
to replace Steve Ballmer, who will step down within a year from the software
giant.
Not because he’s been doing a bang-up job of late. While Microsoft has
no doubt become a much bigger, sprawling empire since Ballmer took the
mantle from co-founder Bill Gates in 2000, it is facing a seismic shift in
its core business. Ballmer’s been largely slow or off-target in reacting to
those shifts, which is why the company barely registers as a force in the
mobile device market that is eating away at the core PC business.
The stock market likes the announcement with Microsoft stock jumping 6%. |
