Boeing Co. plans to lay off employees as it scales back its workforce on its
747 and 787 airplane programs.
According to Boeing, the reduction of 800 machinist jobs is part of a long-
term plan and doesn't indicate cuts in production rates for either plane,
according to a report by Steve Wilhelm of the Puget Sound Business Journal.
The machinist jobs are the only layoffs Boeing is anticipating as it cuts
employment by as much as 2,300 at its Boeing Commercial Airplanes unit in
the Puget Sound region in Washington. The remainder of the reductions will
come through attrition and redeployment, the company said.
Across the company, Boeing plans to hire up to 10,000 employees this year.
