Mass. boy threatened with suspension for 'Lego guns'
Joseph Cardosa, 5, joins several other students criticized or punished this
month for making a gun-shaped object out of a piece of paper, a toy or their
finger.
A 5-year-old Massachusetts boy was threatened with suspension for making two
gun-shaped objects out of Legos, according to the Washington Times.
The parents of Joseph Cardosa, who is enrolled in an after-school program at
Hyannis West Elementary School, received a letter this week stating he had
received a warning for using the toys "inappropriately," and if he did it
again he’d be suspended for two weeks, the source reported.
Kathi Amato, the principal of Hyannis West Elementary, told Boston-based
news station Fox 25, "We need a safe environment for our students."
"While someone might think that making a Lego gun is just an action of a 5-
year-old, to other 5-year-olds, that might be a scary experience,” Amato
said.
The incident is one of several in the last month where students have been
disciplined for either making things in the shape of a gun or referring to
innocuous toy guns.
In Pennsylvania, a fifth-grader was criticized in front of her class for
attempting to throw away a piece of a paper folded so that it appeared to be
in the shape of a gun. Another Pennsylvania kindergartener got suspended
for 10 days, though the punishment was eventually reduced to two days, after
she told another girl she was going to shoot her with her Hello Kitty toy
gun, which shoots soapy bubbles.
The attorney for the kindergartener’s parents claimed school district
officials labeled the girl a "terrorist threat" for the remark.
Additionally, a 6-year-old Maryland boy was suspended for a day after he
made a gun gesture with his thumb and forefinger while in class and said “
pow,” the New York Daily News reported. |
