BRUSSELS—The European Commission isn't backing a proposal by Viviane Reding
, one of its vice presidents, to introduce quotas for women sitting on the
boards of listed companies, Ms. Reding said Tuesday.
The European Union Commissioner for Justice, Citizenship and Fundamental
Rights had originally pressed for a mandatory 40% of seats on boards to be
taken up by women by 2020, but was forced to scale back her proposal because
of opposition.
At a meeting of all EU commissioners Tuesday—known as a Commission College
—Ms. Reding didn't get the support needed to push forward with her
proposals. Several women commissioners didn't back her plan, according to EU
officials.
In a series of posts on her Twitter account, Ms. Reding said she "will not
give up" on the idea and that José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission
president, "will put this on the Commission agenda again before the end of
November."
The plan had come under fire from various sides, including groups advocating
more women should sit on boards. One of those groups, the 30% Club, had
written earlier Tuesday that it hoped the Commission would shoot Ms. Reding'
s plan down, because "voluntary change is the right approach to achieving a
balanced board." |
