Salvation Army: Gay parents deserve to be put to death
With each passing year, LGBT equality has gained ground, both in Washington
among politicians and with Americans across the country. While approval for
same-sex marriage has reached record highs and 12 states now legalizing same
-sex marriage, not everyone is pleased. One group that has been outspoken
about their opposition and near hatred for the LGBT community has been the
Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army has been outspoken in the past, but Andrew Craibe, a
Salvation Army Media Relations Director, might have taken things a step too
far. Appearing on radio show hosted by journalist Serena Ryan, Craibe
expressed the company's views on the LGBT community and gay parents and when
asked whether gays should be put to death, his response was shocking.
"Ryan: According to the Salvation Army gay parents deserve death. How do you
respond to that, as part of your doctrine?
Craibe: Well, that’s a part of our belief system.
Ryan: So they should die.
Craibe: You know, we have an alignment to the Scriptures, but that’s our
belief.
Ryan: You’re proposing in your doctrine that because these parents are gay,
that they must die.
Craibe: Well...well...because that is part of our Christian doctrine
Ryan: But how is that Christian? Shouldn't it be about love?
Craibe: Well, the love that we would show is about that: consideration for
all human beings to come to know salvation…
Ryan Or die?
Craibe: Well, yes.”
According to TGV News, the Salvation Army released a statement following the
radio appearance and attempted to clarify the anti-gay statements, using
their Christian beliefs for their reason for doing so.
“The Salvation Army encompasses a diverse community with a wide range of
opinions on human sexuality and other subjects. The senior leadership of The
Salvation Army continues to reflect on Christian and Biblical tradition,
and especially on the themes of justice and mercy, to further deepen the
understandings of our own members and build a more healthy relationship with
the LGBTQ community. We pledge to continue to offer services to all and to
treat each person with dignity, respect and non-discrimination.”
While not as extreme as the comments made by the Salvation Army, the fast
food chain "Chick-fil-A" came under fire last year when its president, Dan
Cathy, expressed his anti-gay Christian views against same-sex marriage
causing a backlash with many customers.
Over the last few years, President Obama and Vice President Biden have both
publicly "evolved" and openly supported same-sex marriage, the "Don't ask,
Don't tell" gay military ban has been removed and 12 states have legalized
same-sex marriage. With public approval continuing to rise, the Salvation
Army and other anti-gay organizations will have to change with the times or
risk a tremendous downfall and endless scrutiny.
(Note: The original comments by the Salvation Army representative were made
in the summer of 2012 in Australia. Due to the lack of reporting of this
story, it is worth telling now when LGBT equality is under attack in the
United States and around the world.) |
