提到奥黛丽赫本,我周围的朋友有的喜欢她的《罗马假日》,有的喜欢她的Moon River
, 有的喜欢她相片里从头到脚焕发出的高贵气质,不过我却最喜欢的却是她主演的电影
《修女传》(The Nun’s Story, 1959年)。不知为什么,我总是觉得,这部片子里的
Audrey Hepburn是她所有影片中最美的。在微笑着告别家人憧憬修女院生活,在减去长
发带上白色的头巾,在天主前匐地的祷告发愿,在个性和服从冲突下的痛苦和安宁,在
离开刚果鲜花丛里透出的微笑,是的,在这些时刻里的,是我最喜欢的她。
内容介绍
Gabrielle van der Mal是一个很有主见的女孩子。她在恋爱上受挫后,决心进入修女
院,做一名最优秀的修女。她很钦佩修院里德高望重的Sister William,她想着能去刚
果的热带丛林里当一名护士,做她所梦想热爱的奉献工作,她对未来充满了信心。在离
家临走的时候,她对她忧伤的弟弟说:“我希望你能和我一样地快乐。”
然而事实并不像Gaby想象地那样顺利,很多不如愿的事情接二连三地发生了。Sister
William只是在修女报道的时候匆匆地和Gaby说了几句话,就按照纪律再也不能再有私
下交谈、甚至不再见面了。贫穷、守贞、服从,修院的三大誓愿,外加上静默、卑微、
严格的仪式和细致的忏悔,让Gaby有点透不过气来。她对天主祈祷说:“Dear Lord,
the more I try, the more imperfect I become. I seem to fail in charity,
humility, and obedience. Pride has not been burned out of me.”。Sister Luke
——她带着经过严格的考察期后从见习修女转为正式修女的新名字,来到安特卫普的医
学院准备远赴刚果前的医学学习训练。当她被要求故意让自己的医学考试不及格来表示
谦逊和服从的美德的时候,Luke拒绝了。所以虽然考试成绩优异,但是Luke却只被分派
到了女精神病院做帮佣,而不是她所心驰神往的刚果。
终于,她还是来到了思念已久的热带刚果。她原本兴致勃勃地打算学习当地语言并且在
简陋的热带丛林医院工作奉献,却不如愿地被派遣到当地白人医院和一个脾气古怪的老
光棍医生一起共事。痛苦地挣扎在繁忙的医院工作和修女的宗教仪式之间、来回奔波在
医院和修院之间的Sister Luke染上了肺结核病(TB)。老光棍医生最终治好了她的病
,但是他对Luke说:“You stick to your own ideas. You'll never be the kind of
nun that your convent expects you to be. That's your illness. The TB is a
byproduct”。
当她把自己浸在繁忙的手术中而压缩睡眠时间,当她看到与世隔绝在丛林深处的神父和
麻风病人住在一起而一生无悔,当她看到当地人因为宽恕而感动归化天主,当她一个人
治疗了神父的骨折挽救了神父的腿,当她隐瞒自己的肺结核病情不让其他修女知道的时
候,Sister Luke爱上了刚果的生活;“入世”的她已经绝然不想再回到欧洲那冷冰冰
的修道院里过隐居生活了。然而由于紧急的任务,她还是被派遣回到了祖国比利时,并
且而随着第二次世界大战的爆发,隔绝了返回刚果的路。她必须要把在刚果的一切的一
切的记忆统统地抹去,而回归到修院平静、苦修的生活里去。
一切终于结束了。Luke的父亲在逃难中被德军飞机射杀,她的弟弟所在的比利时部队被
德国人击败正在溃退。Sister Luke觉得自己再也无法遵守修女院隶属医院的战时规定
——“It will be your responsibility to set the example of courage and calm,
and to retain in your hearts the spirit of charity for all, even the
enemies.”。只要她一回忆起自己那被杀害的父亲,想起正在和德国人战斗的弟弟,她
无法不再不仇恨德国人。她一面陷入悲伤来带的怨恨,一面又陷入深深的自责。“I
wear the habit of obedience, but I flout the Rule. I wear the cross of
Christ above a heart filled with hate.”在痛苦到达极大值之后,一切都恢复了平
静。Sister Luke向神父提出要求离开修女院。“You're so hard on yourself, my
child. You will make a novena to our Blessed Virgin.”告解神父的劝说并不奏效
,对圣母的九日敬礼也不奏效。Luke回顾自己在修院和刚果的十六年,是挣扎在“自我
”和“服从”之间,在“护士”和“修女”之间的十六年。“You entered the
convent to be a nun, not to be a nurse. The religious life must be more
important to you than your love of medicine.”这是修女院长Mother Emmanuel对
Luke最后的话。
Sister Luke不再有了。Gabrielle,没有人来送她,一个人,冷清清地离开了修女院,
投去参加到反德地下组织的医护队里去。
简评
当我在现实中遇见修女的时候,我的头一个问题就是:“您看过《修女传》吗?里面的
描述是真实地反应了修女的生活吗?”的确,现在的修女已经经历了很多改革(她们甚
至不用再穿一直沿用的传统黑色或白色的袍子头布),但是贫穷、守贞、服从的誓愿还
是修女生活的核心。“Gaby, I can see you poor, I can see you chaste. But I
cannot see you, a strong-willed girl, obedient to those bells.”在走向修院的
路上,Gaby的父亲对她说道。是啊,一个有个性、有自我意识的人,怎么能够适应绝对
的、无条件的服从呢?如果说个性和意识是人性的代表,绝对的服从代表宗教性,这部
电影是在描述宗教性和人性的长达十六年的斗争,最终人性战胜宗教性,路加修女还俗
,是这样吗?很多人是这样解读的。
但是,请想一下所谓的“无条件的服从perfect obedience”到底是为了什么?只是为
了束缚修女吗?在个性和服从之间,必须只是斗争,直到无法协调的最大化以后达到崩
溃吗?我看不见得。准军事化的obedience不是用来——如同军事战场上那样——攻克
敌人的阵地,而是为了攻克自己,自己的偏见、狭念、自我,以至于从终改变和完善自
己。自我的个性往往是偏见的源泉,而偏见又导致一个人并不可能真正提高自己。服从
的真正目的,是为了让人能认识到自己的卑微,在卑微的最低点中放弃一切执着从而真
正地看清楚自己,让圣灵进驻自己,或者按照佛教的说法,从“破执去妄”的最低点起
来,从谦虚的谦虚中提高自己。这可能就是法国的小德兰修女所谓的“小孩之道”(
The little way)吧。“you are only an instrument. In yourself you are
nothing,”电影里的修女院长说,“until you are lifted up.”这大概是正确的。不
要忘记了,无条件服从不是限制人和束缚人的一个目标,而只是为了提升人而进行的一
种手段,是为了让人能够通过天主来“until lift up”。最终,规矩是为人服务的,
而不是人为规矩服务的。这也就是当初宗教改革时期天主教规范严格修院制度的原因吧。
问题还是出在Luke修女本人的修行方法上,她在修院清规之外给自己加上的那条座右铭
“all or nothing”。Obedience的本质目标,是用来冲淡Luke个性中的、正如她父亲
说的“strong will”,使她从固执的个性中暂时释放出来,站到一个完全不同的境地
来看待自己,最终能在“心中不执一物”,在strong will的个性之外知晓“致中和”
的道理,把握度量,万事能执不倚;从而返回来而对obedience也能达到新的认识,达
到孔夫子所谓的“从心所欲,不逾矩”的宁和境界。Luke修女却走了另外一条道路。她
用自己的strong will来解读obedience,用她还未成为修女时候的座右铭“all or
nothing”作为她的负担,在远远不能达到all or nothing的境界时,却要求自己百分
百地遵守修院的规定,希望从严格地遵守服从,克服、习惯于一切痛苦,最后达到“
some sort of resting place where obedience would be natural and struggle
would end”。这无疑是一种缘木求鱼,因为,她所施行的所有方法,都没有摆脱掉她
自己的strong will。所以,当修女院长Emmanuel说“过犹不及”,当精神病院院长
Chris说“永远不可能达到你要求的这种宁和境界”,当刚果医生说“你对自己太紧张
了,这样持续不了多久”,当告解神父说“你对自己太hard了,希望你能向圣母敞开自
己的心”的时候,Luke都无法听进去,她只是我行我素地遵守自己的strong will所带
来的偏见和自己对于修院规矩的理解。这也许就是她最终不能成圣的主要原因吧。
总之,和很多人认识宗教性和人性所谓“两条路线的斗争”最后人性压倒宗教性的认识
不同,在我看来,宗教性的本质目的——至少是电影里提到的无条件服从、最高的谦逊
、最大的卑微的目的,不是为了限制人,而是为了成就人。对于成功的喜悦、对于失去
亲人的悲伤、对于弥撒和护理两者之间的处理、对于恋爱的认识,只有在自我个性从
strong will里拔出来得到提升,才能知道如何最好地面对这些问题,才能真正地达到
“从心所欲,不逾矩”的宁和境界。

场景二(修院长Mother Emmanuel的讲话)
Dear children, it is not easy to be a nun. It is not a life of refuge from
the world. It is a life of sacrifice. In a way, it is a life against nature.
It is a never-ending struggle for self-perfection. Some of you will have
more trouble than others. Poverty, chastity, and obedience are extremely
difficult. Each of us here can assure you of that. The sacrifices that are
required of us are bearable only if we make them with LOVE.
……. Remember, dear children, you can very easily cheat us your sisters,
but you can never cheat yourself, or God.
场景三(精神病院院长Mother Christophe和Sister Luke的对话)
Chirs: My child, I don't underestimate for a moment the seriousness of your
faults. But you mustn't destroy yourself with guilt and remorse. You must
learn to bend a little or you'll break.
Luke: Long before I entered the order, I had a rule of my own: ALL OR
NOTHING. I want to be a good nun or...
Chirs: You will be a good nun, Sister Luke.
Luke: I thought one would reach some sort of resting place where obedience
would be natural and struggle would end.
Chirs: THERE IS NO RESTING PLACE. EVER. But you must have patience with
yourself. Unhappy saints are lost from the beginning. Ask for God's help and
guidance,and I know you will make your final vows.
场景四(在刚果,Sister Aurelie被人杀害了,修女们却依然过着平静的生活。医院助
手Illunga和路加修女的对话)
Illunga: I do not understand. You're not angry with us?
Luke: There's no place in our hearts for anger.
Illunga: But this is killing, Mama Luke.
Luke: Not even then.
Illunga: If such a death happened with us, we'd tie the murderer to a stake
and cut his body for fish bait.
Luke: But we would not. We've been taught to forgive.
场景五:
Sister Luke要从刚果回比利时了。当她走进车厢里,发现车厢里早已经布满了鲜花。
当火车缓缓地驶离简易的车站,Luke看到了前来默默送别她的医生Dr. Fortunati(就
是那个古怪的老光棍)。于是赫本,不,路加修女嫣然地一笑——我所看过赫本最美的
微笑,永远地离开了刚果,留着她记忆的地方。
场景六(Sister Luke最终要还俗了。修院长Mother Emmanuel和Sister Luke的最终对
话之片段,给人以思考。)
Luke: You can cheat your sisters, but you cannot cheat yourself or God.
Emmanuel: Have you struggled long enough to say surely that you've come to
the end?
Luke: I think I've been struggling all these years, Reverend Mother. In the
beginning, each struggle seemed different from the one before it. But then
they began to repeat, and I saw they all had the same core: Obedience,
without question, without inner murmuring. Perfect obedience as Christ
practiced it, as I no longer can. There are times when my conscience asks
which has priority. It or the Holy Rule? When the bell calls me to chapel, I
often have to sacrifice what might be the decisive moment, in a spiritual
talk with a patient. I'm late every day for chapel or refectory or both.
When I have night duty, I break the Grand Silence, because I can no longer
cut short a talk with a patient who seems to need me. Mother, why must God's
helpers be struck dumb by five bells, in the very hours when men in trouble
want to talk about their souls?
Emmanuel: You entered the convent to be a nun, not to be a nurse. The
religious life must be more important to you than your love of medicine.

罗马假日我记得最清楚的就是格里高利派克把手伸到一个石头狮子嘴巴里然后拿出来手
没了,赫本一声惊叫。事后花絮说格里高利派克的trick事先没告诉赫本,所以当时赫
本的惊叫是完全真实的。

我想想哦,在这个版混久了,我对基督徒的良好品德可能有点faith八, 骂街拉,撒
泼啦,说脏话拉,不敢直接面对问题跑啦,横刀立马大胜而归等等等等的,你要不要再
归纳几点?

為了這一幕, 我還特別跑到羅馬那裡,照樣伸手進去慘叫一下。
那裡其實遊客不多,不是很重要的景點, 都是看了電影才去的。
Mouth of Truth
"The legend is that if you're given to lying, you put your hand in there and
it will be bitten off."
This stone face with an open mouth is a widely popular attraction, even
fifty years after the movie, due to that famous scene where Gregory Peck
pulls his hand out of the mouth, with his arm up his sleeve, completely
astonishing the young Audrey Hepburn. It is located in the portico of the
sixth-century church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, in the Piazza Bocca della
Verita. Get in line with the school groups and other visitors to test your
honesty by sticking your hand inside the mouth. This is one of those great,
hokey photo-ops all vacations need!
