I just got back from attending it in Chicago, and I will say in no uncertain
terms that it is 100% serious and totally awesome. There are 5 sessions: 1
(day) and 2 (night) on Friday, 3 and 4 on Saturday, and then Sunday is 5. We
went to 3 and 5. It was absolutely incredible. I can't possibly convey how
electric the atmosphere was in the United Center (which btw is a great venue
). In no way did any player not take it seriously. On the contrary, there
were moments where the intensity may have exceeded even grand slam matches.
Players totally bought into and thrived off the team aspect. In particular
Team World totally fed off their team energy and the intensity of the
Chicago crowd which was mostly in their corner. They had no business being
in contention vs the stacked Team Europe but found themselves actually
leading on Sunday after a miracle tiebreaker win in doubles by Jack Sock and
John Isner over Federer and Zverev.
The Sunday session was off the charts. The doubles match mentioned above was
sublime. The crowd was out of their mind and was absolutely bonkers in the
match tiebreaker culminating when the two Americans saved two match points
at 7-9 and going on to take it. You just don't get that same energy without
the team format. They prevailed entirely because of the rallying by their
teammates and the crowd.
After each match they'd get comments from the victor. Uniformly every player
would praise the event and the crowd. Zverev said that they wished they
could play this event every week.
During other matches, it was nearly worth the price of admission to watch
Sock and Kyrgios joke and rally from the team area right behind the player
bench. We snuck down during the clinching match and were maybe 10 yards from
the European bench. Close enough to watch Sock trash talk and stare them
down - them being the GOAT, another legend, and several other amazing
players. Nowhere else will you see that fun, human side of these elite
athletes, comradari among teammates who would otherwise be rivals, and
laying-it-all-on-the-line play all blended into one.
This was the real deal. I don't know what it's future will be, but the 2018
Laver Cup in Chicago was an experience of a lifetime. I have attended the
first weekend of the US Open, an NHL game 7, a Packers Vikings game to
decide who makes the playoffs, and Twins playoff games in the Metrodome (
loud). I would place this at or above any of those.
The Laver Cup far surpassed my expectations, which were high. Genuine? Yes. |
