(1) Six of Taiwan's 23 diplomatic allies are in the Pacific Islands. They
are Palau, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Kiribati, Tuvalu and Solomon Islands.
(2) "Kiribati was named Gilbert Islands after the British Captain Thomas
Gilbert, who sighted the islands in 1788."
