I love you for the independent thinking.
I, for one, also propose English as the dominant language in Taiwan, much
like Singapore.
However, the obstacles are huge, if not insurmountable.
Taiwan is no longer authoritarian. Japan was a colony of Japan for five
decades until 1945. By that time, people in Taiwan could not speak Mandarin
but Japanese and dialects (Hoklo and Hakka) an

祝阿扁先生生日快乐!!!
49岁--57岁,担任最高领导人,斯平民出身,靠自己的才干和努力,而不是暴力做到

But his birthday is October 12, 1950. Past.
Anyway, I am resigned to the prospect that KMT will regain the presidency--
but I vow to fight Ma Ying-jeou to the end (as KMT has done to Mr. Chen Shui
-bian). Then Mr. Chen will be remebered as the ONLY person who broke the
stranglehold of KMT.

中国大陆随处可见的资料,扁先生的生日是1951.02.18。连这个日期也成了“橡皮泥
”?还是以讹传讹?

Wow! You have sharp eyes.
Firstly I have never celebrated my birthday, because I considered it
bourgeois. (Yes,when I was younger, which means when I was in Taiwan, I was
kind of radical and dreamed of communism. As one gets older, he should be
leaning toward Republican (which refers to "Republican Party" in US, not "
Republic of China") ideals--because he is becoming wealthier. That
conversion happens to me--and probably Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo.
Return to your topic. Only yesterdat did I care when

I was looking for this posting of yours (attached below), because I had been
haunted by it in the past several days.
This is what I have to say.
(1) About your secondparagraph.
You are self-effacing 谦虛. China is storied* and had 劉邦 and 朱元璋 at
least.
(Note* :The word "storied" means full of stories, not boring. It can be
goodstories or bad.) (Another note: China is storied, as much as US. I first
thought nobody in Taiwan cited historic stories toillustrate his points
because Taiwanese knew little

If you dare to say that the dominant language in Singapore is English, you
are doomed. The official languages in Singapore are English, Mandarin,
Malay and Tamil, and none of it takes precedence to the other. Lee Kuan Yew
thrived so hard to make sure that the four major races in Singapore
recognize that they need to live peacefully with each other and that none of
their languages is seen as the "dominant" one, yet you are here to spoil
his vision altogether.

Well, I say, it's an insult to their independence that earlier generations

I want to make two corrections
(1) I was referring to Pres. Hu's visit in April 2006, not "2002."
(2) Grammatically, it was confided "in" Bush, not "to,"

You are absolutely wrong. A Singaporean can choose to use any of the four official languages at any government facilities or premises, and it does not have to be translated into English as long as it's one of the four official languages it will be recorded as is. A Singaporean kid can choose any of the four languages he/she wants to learn and use in school and it does NOT have to be English. Take it from me, I am Singaporean, too, since I was a kid! Many people pick up English not because it

(1) Regarding Singapore.
(a) With regard to languages, this is what US State Department has under "
