"What is a TV but a 60" computer screen? Ours has 3 or 4 input devices (Wii,
DVD, HD cable box, Roku, etc) that are essentially no different than the ha
rd drive or DVD drive on my laptop. The TV is hard-wired to "cable" as oppos
ed to wireless to the router, but that difference is irrelevant -- we get Ne
tflix via the Wii from the wireless router link. The hard-wired cable connec
tion is essentially just our 200 "favorite sites to link to"... or they shou
ld be.
The big distinction between cable and internet is who controls the timing. I
t makes no sense to me why the content providers or the cable companies even
want to control the timing -- it limits their access to potential customers
. Hence the cable company provides us with a DVR box so we can bypass their
own limitations. It also makes no sense to me why they want to force me to s
ee generic ads instead of using the information they have about me (via the
web) to send me much more targeted ads. They should be able to get more reve
nue if they can advertise "smarter".
It seems to me there should be an opportunity to "grow the pie" -- more tota
l viewing hours and more revenue from advertising -- by making television mo
re user friendly. It also seems to me that all the fighting over what the ne
xt generation of television will be is all the players trying to manipulate
it to get them the biggest slice. If Apple (or anyone else) can broker the s
olution, like Apple essential did with iTunes, there is big money in it for
them. Given Apple's consumer brand power, I give them a good shot. It would
make more sense for the big content providers (Disney, Viacom, HBO, etc) to
work with the big cable companies to construct their own deal, but I'm not s
ure they are capable of doing that."

of the world. Just like recession people will dump the milk, those content
provider prefer not to provide cheap content even if it will bring overall
more revenue but benefit some potentional power like APPL to control them.
Those cable, wireless carrier already enough with AAPL, if APPL sale going
down one day, it will drop like a shit very fast since all the deals with
those wireless carriers will be revisited soon

comes to negotiating content deals. plus, it doesn't have to be deeply
discounted content to make a hit. a reinvented living room experience is all
it takes.
