A Senate plan that places insurance requirements on app-based transportation
services like Uber and Lyft is now poised to move to the House, which is
set to take up its own plan today.
By a vote of 28-12, the Senate passed Sen. David Simmons' SB 1298, which
would require higher coverages for transportation network companies (TNC)
like Uber and Lyft than in Rep. Matt Gaetz's plan. Gaetz's HB 817 has been
placed on the House third reading calendar.
Insurance requirements have been a sticking point between Uber and the cab
companies, who want Uber to obey the same local insurance regulations.
Simmons' bill requires TNCs to carry at least $1 million in death and bodily
injury insurance and $50,000 in property damage when giving a ride. It also
requires bodily injury coverage of $125,000 per person and $250,000 per
incident and $50,000 in property damage when a driver has the app turned on
but is not carrying or picking up a passenger. It also adds additional
insurance requirements for "rogue" drivers who pick up people without using
the app. | p****p
