I think what Physics meant was that the field has been so diversified today that
few physicists are still at the wavefront of the most fundamental problem physics
are facing today, that is certainly true. But heck, that's probably not much different
from the dawn of the 20th century. Even today many physics problems are still being
solved in the framework of Newtonian physics.
A recent issue of Scientific American discussed this problem. The author proposed

A lot of Physicists are trying to unify the theory. Did you heard of the M-theory which is one of the most popular topic now.
I cannot agree!!! Basicly, most problenly are using either Quantum Mechanics or Relativity.
Newtonians physics are still used in some aspect as classical chaos or astronomy. Even in these two field, the firt place technology is using modern physics instead of classical physics.
I guess that you are not in physics major.
