Sounds like an extremely stupid decision. The Voyagers are the only
manmade interstellar probes still working now, traversing the heliosheath
where the solar wind's impact gives way to the interstellar wind. Whatever
they encounter out there is new to humans, and they have the potential to
reveal new physics. They are expected to have the capability to work
