eBay's 4Q14 earnings: A mixed performance that keeps it afloat (Part 5 of 10)
eBay plans to cut the headcount
eBay (EBAY) continues to execute job cuts. During the 4Q14 earnings call,
eBay’s management said the company plans to eliminate approximately 2,400
positions, or 7% of its global workforce. The company made this decision in
order to reduce complexity, speed decision-making, and create competitive
cost structures.
Most of the job cuts will come from eBay’s Marketplaces division and fewer
from its PayPal division. Management said PayPal still has a lot of
potential, and hence, there’s a need to accelerate innovation in this
segment. The existing structure thus has to be simplified to reengage
investments.
Marketplaces’ business revenue growth much slower than PayPal’s
A couple of months ago, eBay (EBAY) announced its split with Paypal. You can
read more about this in Market Realist’s article Why eBay’s Q3 results
show PayPal spinoff was the right decision. As the article states, eBay’s
Marketplaces business revenue growth is much slower than Paypal’s growth,
thus making a spinoff the right decision strategically.
After the spinoff, eBay will face more challenges to protect its
profitability because of the slower revenue growth of its Marketplaces
division. This is why the company is looking to cut jobs in 2015.
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the planned layoffs will
make eBay a potentially attractive takeover target. The Marketplaces
division, which includes eBay.com and StubHub, is more profitable than
PayPal but is growing more slowly and faces rising threats from Amazon (AMZN
) and Alibaba (BABA).
Analysts say job cuts will help lower operating costs, a key metric for
buyout firms, thus making eBay an ideal candidate.
In a recent Market Realist article, we discussed how Amazon (AMZN) is seeing
stiff competition from traditional retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
(WMT) and Target (TGT). These companies have started to offer cheaper
products online compared to Amazon. eBay (EBAY) is also feeling the heat
since it’s also a pure online player similar to Amazon and Alibaba.
To overcome this competition and improve its margins, eBay is cutting jobs
as its main strategy.
For a diversified exposure to eBay, investors can consider ETFs such as SPDR
S&P 500 (SPY). This ETF invests in the 500 largest US companies. The
technology sector makes up 18% of the SPY portfolio. | t******o 发帖数: 3223 | 2 卖个东西 10% 都让他拿走了, 再加上 3% 的 paypal, 不 cut 还能活吗
