MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA –This week Newsweek magazine released their America’s
Best High Schools 2013 rankings. Out of over 25,000 high schools nationally
, Los Altos High School (LAHS) ranked 132 and Mountain View High School (
MVHS) ranked 229. The ranking is based on the schools that best prepare
students for college. The metrics that were used by Newsweek include
graduation rates (LAHS 99%, MVHS 97%), college bound rate (LAHS 96%, MVHS 97
%), SAT average (LAHS 1801, MVHS 1818), ACT average (LAHS 27.2, MVHS 26.4)
and average AP score out of five (LAHS 4.0, MVHS 3.8).
Both Mountain View Los Altos School District comprehensive high schools
continue to rise in these annual rankings by Newsweek Magazine, as well as
in the recently released rankings by U.S News and World Report Best High
Schools.
LAHS Teacher DeeDee Pearce shared some of the successes LAHS has had in its
social studies program, “The social studies department’s collective
efforts and focus on strengthening our writing program. The skill building
involved in the writing of a historical essay, along with the interpretation
and analysis of primary sources, contributes to students gaining an
enduring understanding of the content standards. Our teachers also strive
to provide learning opportunities outside of the classroom. We recently
received the first annual Civics Learning Award of Merit based on several
programs including Haiti Solidarity, History Week and our US History
Muckraking Project. These experiences help students extend classroom
learning to the real world.”
Betty Yamasaki of LAHS’ math department added, “We attribute our successes
, in part, to the collaboration and support of Wynne Satterwhite, our
principal, and her administrative team. We brought in support classes in
Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II for those students who struggle in math.
For high achieving students, we have added Multivariable Calculus,
Statistics AP and AP Computer Science. Teachers are encouraged to
collaborate interdepartmentally. Additionally, we have helped create the
Ninth Grade Core Team, working alongside the English, Science, History and
Counseling departments to support our at-risk students.”
Santa Clara County boasts many of the top-ranked 2,000 high schools in the
country. Listed below is the Newsweek national ranking for the top ten
county high schools.
