Cisco braces for biggest layoffs in its history
BOSTON, May 12 (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O) is expected to cut
thousands of jobs in possibly its worst-ever round of layoffs to meet Chief
Executive John Chambers' goal of slashing costs by $1 billion.
Four analysts contacted by Reuters estimated the world's largest maker of
network equipment will eliminate up to 4,000 jobs in coming months, with the
average forecast at 3,000. That would represent 4 percent of Cisco's 73,000
permanent workers. It also has an undisclosed number of temporary
contractors.
Cisco's previous record layoffs was set in fiscal 2002, when the company
shed some 2,000 jobs, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst Paul Mansky. |

the valley, it is 5K employees.

P**********c 发帖数: 3417 | 22 I think they are fine as long as they don't care about what wallstreet says.
Their revenue is No. 4 in the valley, and their profit is No. 6. Profit margin, though lower than before, is still much higher than an average silicon or security company. They have only 7w people to feed. That's nothing compared to, say, IBM's 42w or HP's 32w. Oracle's revenue and profit are very similar to Cisco, yet it has more than 10w people and Oracle is generally regarded as very healthy. There are many companies in the valley with financial situations much worse than Cisco, some lost money for years, and they are still surviving. Cisco is still earning big money. It is no where near being in trouble. Sometimes it is just that Wallstreet keeps telling a perfectly fine company that it is in trouble and then it takes actions and then situations got worse and worse.

John Chambers said, he cares (1) Stock price, and (2) Cash. He will do
everything he can to make those two good.

challenged and Cisco is loosing market
share, if Cisco does nothing, given the fast changing trend in network
equipment market, it can go under
faster than you can expect.
Also, as a public company, how can you not care about what wallstreet says?
then what should a CEO or board
care?
