It’s official: Spain’s Real Madrid and Mexico’s Chivas of Guadalajara
will meet in a blockbuster international friendly at Qualcomm Stadium on
Wednesday, July 20.
The game is part of the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge, which so
far involves 10 teams and nine games but is expected to grow even further.
It is organized by Soccer United Marketing (the marketing arm of Major
League Soccer) and Creative Artists Agency, which represents David Beckham.
Real Madrid is already booked for two games, also playing July 16 against
MLS’s Los Angeles Galaxy at the L.A. Coliseum. Chivas also will face
Spanish giant Barcelona on Aug. 3 in Miami.
It is an intriguing matchup because it brings together Mexico’s most
popular team and probably Mexico’s most popular foreign team. Real Madrid
is where Mexican superstar Hugo Sanchez played from 1985-92 and claimed four
of his five Spanish league scoring titles.
Also participating in the World Football Challenge so far are Mexico’s Club
America, England’s Manchester City and four MLS teams.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. kickoff at the Q start at $40 and are scheduled to go
on sale to the general public Tuesday at 10 a.m. | f******7
