Jie Zhang, president, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has won the 2007 TWAS
Prize in Physics for his significant contributions to the development of
saturated x-ray lasers and high-power femtosecond laser-interaction with
matter. During the 1980s, he conducted research at the Max-Planck Institute
in Germany and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK, focusing on x-
