did you hear about this in the news: japanese amateur runner who had a full
time office job ran Tokyo
marathon in 2:08. His 5K PR is only barely under 14 min and 10K 29 min. What
kind of mental strength would
it take for him to pull off 2:08? Unbelievable. He puts Ryan Hall to shame.

found a video on youtube. (don't know how to embed the video in the post)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h3vcGx-0TQ
the guy (Yuki Kawauchi) was said to be " in so much pain for the last few km
that he was running with his eyes shut and almost missed a couple turns.
Upon finishing, he passed out and had to be taken away in a wheelchair. "
very inspiring.

This man clearly is very talented. For many pro or pro-wanna-be, it is
unrealistic to stay in pro if their hope to be on the top is slim.
However, those people are just a few minutes away from the top elite, I
guess this guy's average is a little bit more than 2:10, which won't be
promising enough for pro life, but when all stars are aligned, and with
unusually successful training and peak, with to die or nothing forever
opportunity kinda mentality in the race, miracle can happen.

Any one who is not Kenyan nor Ethiopian and runs sub 2:20 could turn pro for
sure. You do realize that
among the current American distance runners except Ryan and Meb none has
broken 2:10.

I was talking about stay in pro. Being a pro and never win any big race
(winning, I mean by top 3) will be financially challenging. I remember in
one article, in Japan, people use 2:10 as a benchmark to see the potential
of a pro. Many people just choose to have a job since they will never
break 2:10 in their life time

well, if only being No 1 matters, then we will see even fewer pros around
attract much attention unless you are very young or something else.
Sponsors usually will be happy to have runner finish top, and those
runners will have incentive to stay that way

Josh Cox's marathon PR is 2:12. His is one of the best known current
marathoners in the US. Brian Sell's
marathon PR is 2:10:47. He is a hero to many American runners and went to
Beijing Olympics. The "pro
standard" you came up with is simply not true.

to run 200 miles per week and to run a fast marathon are very different
things. to race like a pro, not only you
need to do the workout, but you need the time to rest as well. we don't have
the luxury to take naps after
every morning workout and go for another one in the afternoon. American
professional runners have coaches
and a team of doctors working for them.
