w****1 发帖数: 4931 | 1 It's about time.
It was still dark 6am in the morning, about 40F in Tokyo. Headed out from my
hotel to Ueno park. Though I
haven't been out on the road in three weeks, my strides felt super smooth
and my legs felt strong and
springy. I would hit 6:30 pace with ease. In the park I met a group of 12
high school looking kids, running
together, in two lines side by side, exactly like in the movies. Since I
didn't know my way, I followed them for
a little bit. In Tokyo the pedestrians wait for the traffic light to cross
the street, even when it's dark and there
are no cars on the road. These runners did exactly that, -- they would stop
running to wait for the light to
turn green, even when there were no cars around. They were going pretty
slowly, 9-10 minutes pace. They
don't say a word to each other, except near the end of their run, all of
them said something at the same time
(which I couldn't understand). When the sun came up, I saw more runners in
the park, men and women, all of
them running quite slowly, a pleasant sight nonetheless. I finished an easy
session of about 6.7 miles, felt
good, no problem with my shin at all.
I don't find Japanese people to be particularly hard working or hardcore in
general. The word that comes to
mind, however, is meticulous. At work I was instructed to sort my garbage
carefully when disposing them,
because "their ancestor had the wisdom on how to live cleanly in harmony on
a small island". Even
construction sites of new buildings are kept clean and orderly. It is
considered unacceptable to blow one's
nose in public -- the way how American runners blow their nose on the road
is just unthinkable here. You are
not even supposed to eat food while walking on the street - if you want to
do that, you have to face the wall
while eating so that nobody sees it. This country is a spectacle. | w*******e 发帖数: 2651 | 2 Nice running session with Japanese runners! | b***i 发帖数: 10018 | 3 nice to hear that you've recovered. looking forward to your running stories

| w****1 发帖数: 4931 | 8 I'm not 100%. Still felt some soreness in my shin a few hours after my run.
I'm going to resume some
workouts, though not ready to run 6,7 days a week yet. It may take another
month or two before I can return
to full form.

get you anywhere in the US. It'd be
mistaken for submissiveness (like how Canadians are perceived in the US).
While the Japanese are infinitely
polite, Americans are warmer people - in Japan few would give you a hand
with baggages on a train, and
people don't normally greet strangers.
