Two punks face serious charges after a runner suffered serious injuries when
slammed by a pumpkin hurled from a moving vehicle.
Rachel Vaughan, 54, was training with members of a running club when the
pumpkin was pitched from a pickup truck Nov. 17 on Glenridge Ave. near
Riverview Blvd. in St. Catharines.
"I didn't know it hit me. I thought it was a car," she told the St.
Catharines Standard last Friday. "When I was lying on the ground, I saw the
pumpkin guts and I thought it was me. I thought I was going to die."
Niagara Regional Police said Vaughan suffered serious internal injuries in
the attack and was admitted to St. Catharines General Hospital.
She has internal bleeding, is in extreme pain and hasn't been able to walk
since the incident.
"It's really senseless," she said through grimaces of pain.
Vaughan was race walking with members of the St. Catharines Roadrunners and
Walkers, a group she's been a member of for 19 years. Her husband, Carl, was
with the group.
Two youths, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were
arrested Wednesday and later released from One District into the custody of
their parents.
Each youth is charged with assault with a weapon.
Anyone with information on the incident should call police at 905-688-4111,
ext. 4272. |
