I am not sure of the situation in the financial field. In IT companies,
having more experience after 5-6 years will not make much difference, unless
the person becomes a manager, team lead, or architect. I am none of those,
just a senior software engineer.

工资不比很多fresh PhD做IT的高。既然公司在SF, 说明SF这个位置你满意。那为什么
不去硅谷继续做IT呢？在金融公司做IT如果和algorithmic trading没关系的话，是没
什么意思的。如果和trading有关系，因为时差的原因早上要起的特别早。你有10年工
作经验的话现在年龄应该也不小了。你确定你想改变诸多硅工早上10点到公司的习惯？
Keep in mind, 无论哪家公司(除了国营的)，谁创造效益谁牛B.在IT公司，程序员直接
创造效益，或者至少理解自己如何创造效益。你对你要去的这个职位如何给公司创造效
益了解么？

I am considering this offer because my current job pays even lower. I am at
$118K now without any bonus/stock.
Yes, I found that many fresh PhD have a higher salary than me. I have a
master degree and it seems that $100K to $120K are the prevailing wages for
people with masters in SF, although some of them come with bonus and/or
stock. It seems I already reached the ceiling as a senior software engineer
. I am not the one that know algorithms very well or has some expertise in
some area. Just 10 years working experience with some knowledges on many
things.

software tools for the use of other departments including back office in the
company.
I am also thinking for finding a position in a potential Pre-IPO startup
with stock options. Do you think that is a better choice?

the company is located in NY. It's an unfortunate fact that people without
financial background are paid lower even in IT, which is totally bullshit to
me.
But after seeing this: "The position is to create common libraries and
software tools for the use of other departments including back office in the
company.", I would question the target of 20-40k year end bonus. It seems
to me quite out of bound given the nature of the position. But again,
nothing is impossible, it's just my doubt.
Choosing between a big, stable company and a startup depends completely on
your short/long term career goals. I don't think anyone can give you advise
on this. It's not about money, it's about your risk appetite and your
interest in which industry.

It's the size of the bonus compared with the nature of the job made me
suspicious but as I said, nothing is impossible.

offered a lower base with a bigger bonus. Then I negotiated a higher base
but with a smaller bonus. The totals are about the same in the two
different ways.
