about math, but not the life style. I am wondering if someone could share
some advice with me. I like to solve problems and being given tasks, would
like to use my math skill to solve real life problems. I am wondering if
Quant would be better for me. What is chance a pure math ph.d. can make
it? Any advice would be highly appreciated. |

job. But I really don't like the academic life style. I have had
depression for a long period of time. I really would like to be able to
enjoy the time with my new-born baby at nights without worrying about if I
should be writing papers or doing research. I love math. But I also like
to be able to not think about math all the time. I also hating working on
my own too.

experience(although they may have certain preference).

school? If yes, you don't need a MFE.
My personal experience, for fresh PhD looking for quant, the rank of best
majors are:
Computer Science > Finance > STAT/MATH > ECE > any other engineering majors.

I hope I am wrong, my PhD is from an engineering major, although my research
mainly focused on PDEs and data analysis. The recruiters just won't think
it that way, they care more about the name of your department. That's why I
went to statistics to get another MSCF degree. Simply to build the odd. |

But firstly u need to face the fact: math is math, work is work and life is
life..Not too many lucky heros could "use my math skill to solve real life
problems". You have the desire for money/food/sex, and then work, and then
harvest. That is it. my 2cents.
As a pure math, plan half a year for stochastic, probability, statistics,
and programming. Then you can do it!

with computer science. Not any experience in finance either. Although I
got the first prize in the international math modeling contest back in
college. Would that count for something?

(several years ago). Do I need to take any course to pick those back? or
just read some books? Where can I find books on those subjects just for
the purpose of getting a quant job? i.e. how do I present the evidence
that I know those subject to recruiters?
