"This film, which opened in New York recently, was a total surprise. Director
Niki Caro has done wonders in bringing this story to the screen as it shows a
different and much simple world than the rat race of our society and the
horrible times we live in.

”了。到现在刚了解了一点点empathy的意思了，可还是没弄明白那电影里哪点儿和它有
关。所以，就还没一丁点儿idea. 大家没看过whale rider那部片子的话，也没法帮我讨
论。

那是一部描写发生在新爱尔兰的毛利人的故事。
这对大家看是不是：
12岁的小女孩Pai是本族首领的孙女。出生时她的双胞胎兄弟和她妈妈都死了，只有她存
活了。Pai的父亲即首领的长子不愿承继父亲的首领位置，所以首领就把希望寄托在长孙
身上，也就是那个出生就死了的Pai的双胞胎兄弟。按照本族的规定，只有头胎的男孩才
有资格作首领。在本族中找部到合适的首领接班人让老首领很难过。他爱孙女Pai但坚决
不打破族规，认为她是女孩所以没资格作首领接班人。Pai深深的爱她的爷爷，即使他的
训斥和不接受，她知道他是怎么想的。她认为自己可以作首领，所以她一直努力让爷爷和
族人接受她
她找回了族中所有头胎男孩都没能找到的那块爷爷扔在水中的对本族有特殊意义的鲸牙；
当全族人都束手无策时她成功的救助了搁浅的鲸鱼，那是对本民族意义非常重大的，因为
他们认为他们的祖先是骑着鲸鱼来到的这片土地。最后，爷爷接受了她，Pai作了本民族
的首领。
电影很好看－－要是不是任务的话，还有好多感人的情节我认为和作业无关就没多说
我悄悄地认为：小女孩Pai和爷爷是那个pair.
理由： 爷爷即首领因为找不到合格的接班人

girl challenged the tradition in the tribe and struggled to get accepted by
the "majorities", as well as how the tribe finally modified their "rules" and
accomodate different "culture" to move their community forward.
Think about the way many ethnic minorities struggled in the mainstream
culture.
And also try to think about how you, as a foreign student, struggled to be
accepted in the mainstream white middle class acadm |

of your instructor regarding this assignment. A good starting point is to talk
with his/her and clarify the goals of this task. "Themes of empathy" in itself
is rather vague. Is it referring to your empathy toward characters in the
movie or the empathy illustrated in the movie itself between different
characters? Your instructor may have general direction in mind. It might be
helpful to find out the overall direction
