I talked to the HR of my institute (private research institute) for
transferring to H1b, and they agreed to turn in my H1b application as fast
as they can. I later asked them about the possibility of extending my OPT
by 17 months if the institute is e-verified.
However, the HR people told me that the institute uses e-verify, but that
has nothing to do with visas. I am quite confused by this. Do they mean I

If your major belongs to STEM majors, and your current institute is
registered in E-verify, then you can apply for STEM extension of 17 months.
What you need to do is to contact ISS of your school where you got your
degree for an new I-20 and ask your current employer for its E-verify number.
