Students, faculty and staff,
UWPD recognizes that many members of the campus community are away for
summer break. However, we want to make sure that the following important
information is conveyed to those who are still in Madison.
During the 4th of July weekend, the Madison Police Department, in
conjunction with the UWPD, investigated two separate incidents near the UW-
Madison campus in which a male subject attacked a female who was walking
alone.
In both cases, the male subject approached the female subject from behind
and struck her on the head or neck.
UWPD is continuing to conduct concentrated patrols of the area where the
attacks occurred. Detectives from both UWPD and Madison Police Departments
are investigating in an attempt to identify the suspect.
This violent predator is still at large and UW-Madison, UWPD, and MPD want
to remind the community to have a heightened awareness of their own personal
safety, especially while out at night. General tips include:
•Never walk alone, particularly at night.
•Carry a cell phone and dial 911 for help.
•Utilize SAFE Nighttime Services, http://transportation.wisc.edu/transportation/safeservices.aspx
•Campus and downtown are part of a growing city. Use your instincts
and common sense as your first defense.
•If you plan to drink, do so in moderation to avoid putting yourself
in a position of increased risk.
•Be aware of places along your path of travel that could conceal a
criminal (shrubbery, building recesses, etc.). Avoid or keep a distance from
these areas whenever possible.
•Make sure someone knows when you leave and when to expect you back.
•If you think someone is following you, cross the street. Head for a
well-populated and well-lit area at night.
Anyone with information can call Madison Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-
6014. Callers can remain anonymous.
