A scammer busted using fake credit cards at Texas Target stores last
December may be linked to the massive security breach at the retail giant
which exposed the data of more than 70 million customers, court documents
show.
Guo Xing Chen, 40, is behind bars after employees at a Georgetown Target
busted the man using a fake credit card Dec. 12 and called police, WOAI-TV
reported.
The buy attempt came one day after Chen used a fake card at a Target in
Temple, some 40 miles north, to buy thousands of dollars in giftcards and
Apple iPads. The scam prompted a Central Texas-wide Target lookout alert for
Chen.
Chen had also scammed thousands from a Round Rock Target, court documents
show, and an employee there also alerted cops to the scheme.
Officers tracked Chen to a nearby Starbucks, where they learned the Houston
man also had an outstanding felony warrant in Arkansas for credit/debit card
abuse.
A man at a nearby sandwich shop approached police during the arrest and told
them Chen and another man had been in the store’s bathroom together and
left behind several debit and credit cards, according to a court affidavit.
Cops busted Chen, who was bailed out five days later. He was rearrested
Monday on charges of credit/debit card abuse and fraudulent use of
identifying information.
USA Today reports that Texas police have arrested a man named Guo Xing Chen
they say is linked to the devastating data breach at No. 3 U.S. retail chain
Target...
Target is the nation's third-largest retailer, but suffered some after the
data breach last year.
Investigators from the Target Corporation realized Chen may be involved in
the breach last December that caused turmoil in the company after the credit
card information of 70 million customers was released by a hack.
Just Monday, the company announced Chairman, President and CEO Gregg
Steinhafel would step down, five months after the breach was revealed.
The customers' info was hacked between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, one of the
largest data dumps ever at a retailer.
“The last several months have tested Target in unprecedented ways,”
Steinhafel wrote in a letter to the company’s board. “From the beginning,
I have been committed to ensuring Target emerges from the data breach a
better company, more focused than ever on delivering for our guests.”
In January, two Mexican citizens were arrested at the border with Texas
holding 96 fraudulent credit cards, also related to the breach, authorities
said.
