Reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's wisdom on MLK Day and Call to End
Racial Preference in College and University Admissions
On this great day of our nation’s history, we reflect on Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.’s wisdom and courage. A nation that aspires to achieve racial
equality cannot and should not support institutionalized racist policy. We
can only end racial discrimination by ending racial discrimination, not by
starting a new kind of racial discrimination, such as the racial preference
policy in college admissions which is still widely practiced by many higher
institutions.
The racial preference affirmative action in college and university
admissions has its unintended consequences which the proponents of
affirmative action conveniently and continuously ignore. Self-righteous
social engineering policy, which might even benefit one or few individuals,
such as Justice Sotomayor, always fails on a grand scale. And once again,
it was so eloquently argued by Law Professor Gail Heriot in her recent essay
, "The Sad Irony of Affirmative Action". http://www.nationalaffairs.com/publications/detail/the-sad-irony-of-affirmative-action
Today also marks the beginning of President Obama’s second term – a
historical day worth celebrating and reckoning. I wonder what President
Obama would check his race on college application if he were a graduating
senior. Would he check Black, or White, or Black and White? And would
President Obama check Asian if he were Asian American and knew, by doing so,
it would hurt his chance of admitting to his dream schools? I wonder why
race even matters in this day and age. I do wonder.
But more than just to wonder, I dare to dream, like how Dr. King dreamed. I
dream one day colleges and universities, private or public, would treat
each race equally by adopting a race-blind admission policy. Each of our
children is judged based on his or her own merits, characters, capabilities,
but not the color of his or her skin.

Let’s remember Dr. King’s wisdom and fight for a truly equal and just
society that Dr. King dreamed of.
Best,
