crowned a new number-one today. Samsung Electronics, the biggest part of
the eponymous South Korean conglomerate, reported record quarterly profits
of $12.7bn—a couple of billion more than Apple is likely to have made—
after a year marred by exploding batteries and arrested executives. Samsung
can also call itself the world’s biggest chipmaker, with $15.8bn in
semiconductor revenues. That exceeds the sales of Intel, its giant American
rival. Whether the firm can keep the top spot for long is a matter of debate
. Its ascendancy is mostly due to relentlessly growing demand for memory;
Gartner, a consultancy, reckons that will drive global sales of all chips
this year beyond $400bn for the first time. Samsung seems to sense a chance
to stay on top, having recently announced $18bn of investment in its
semiconductor fabs, which already churn out about 40% of the world’s memory
chips.
