发帖数: 180 | 1 A spontaneous idea during the week found me on the N side of Rainier over
the weekend. This is as late as I’ve ever been to Rainier and my
expectation of summiting via an unfamiliar route was low. My skepticism was
proved right once we got to Camp Schurman on Saturday. The lower portions of
the glaciers were broken up and there was no end in sight of the gulping
ugliness that tries to swallow you. Straight up from the camp, there was no
sane and visible path to get through Emmons so it was out of question. Early
Sunday morning, a faint track of footprints led us westward onto Winthrop
Glacier and we hoped for miracle. Thanks to my aging memory, I forgot to
pack a headlamp for the trip. Walking across thin snow bridges in the wee
hours without a headlamp was more exciting than I wanted.
After a short steep section and gaining about 1,000 ft, the terrain quickly
deteriorated into a labyrinth of gaps, holes, cracks, seracs, and abyss in
all sizes. Everything we tried to end-run ended up being a death trap and
kicked our arses. Good thing was that everything was open and there was no
hidden surprise, the downside was that you are not going anywhere! The
glacier was creaking and thumping under our feet and reminding us its
livelihood. After wandering in the snow & ice maze for a couple of hours,
while appreciating the beauty of the setting, we knew it was after all not a
place to linger for too long.
On our way down, the wind had gained its force and we could see our tent was
flipped over and being thrashed in wind. We rushed back to the camp to find
the tent it was only hanging on a skinny cord tied to a piece of rock while
everything else broke loose. With bags, gear and cameras in it, it would
have been a $1,500 loss had we come back a few minutes later. Holy sh*&%^t!
The descent was tedious and boring. All I wanted was a chilled IPA! | p*******r

glacier tour though and one could try some glacier ice climb.

the only one that stayed open at the time.

are actually going to have above average precipitation, good for them.
