Date: Thursday, September 26
Time: 7:00PM-9:00PM (check-in starts at 6:30PM)
Place: 1871 Broadway, New York City
Speaker: Professor Jimmy Yu (student of Master Sheng Yen)
The modern life is characterized by an ever increasing pace, with constantly
shifting priorities and challenges. The myriad conveniences and
opportunities offered by the modern world come at a paradoxical cost of
increasing stress to our body, mind and spirit, frequently leaving us
feeling stressed, frayed at the edges or even burned out.
In this workshop, Dr. Jimmy Yu, a professor from Florida State University
and a Zen practitioner for more than three decades, teaches how the art of
Zen can help us to regain inner peace and centeredness, using both physical
and mental techniques to become more aware, relaxed and mindful of the
present moment:
• Establish composure: Learn methods to develop greater balance
and mindfulness during the challenges of stress, pain, illness and everyday
life. Learn the skills to avoid emotional and physical depletion.
• Enjoy life fully: Each moment is a new beginning. Learn to embrace
the present moment with openness and clarity. Mindfulness Zen meditation
restores a sense of well-being and empowerment, no matter what challenges
you face.
• Restore your spirituality: This workshop teaches you how to tap
into your inner resources of clarity and focus to break old patterns and
renewal your spirituality.
• Regain your health: Learn methods that promote physical and mental
health. Learn to de-habituate negative patterns and develop positive
responses to life’s stress. Explore how you can take responsibility for
your own health and healing.
Dr. Jimmy Yu, also known by his Dharma name Guo Gu, developed his first
interest in meditation at the age of four. In 1982, at the age of 14, Guo Gu
started practicing under Chan Master Sheng Yen in New York City. In 1991,
he ordained as a monk under Master Sheng Yen to immerse himself fully in the
practice of Chan Buddhism. He returned his robes in 2000 to pursue academic
studies and earned a Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from Princeton University.
Guo Gu is currently teaching Buddhism and East Asian religions as an
Assistant Professor at Florida State University. In 2009, he founded the
Tallahassee Chan Group to continue the Chan lineage of Master Sheng Yen.
