College football notes: Stanford’s Harbaugh silent about future

Jim Harbaugh returned to a welcome-home rally on Stanford’s campus and
offered no insight to what’s next: staying put, bolting to the NFL or going
elsewhere.
Harbaugh shook his head no Tuesday night when asked if he had considered his
options, then briefly addressed a crowd of several hundred before being
whisked away. On Monday, Stanford earned a 40-12 Orange Bowl victory over
Virginia Tech in Miami to finish with a program-best 12-1 record.
Harbaugh now has to weigh his choices, with suitors from coast to coast.
From the Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers, Harbaugh is
a hot commodity around the country. And what about his alma mater, Michigan?
Michigan officials declined comment amid reports that Rich Rodriguez already
had been fired and said they were set to meet again Wednesday with the
embattled coach to discuss his future.
A person familiar with the situation told the AP that Michigan athletic
director Dave Brandon has not decided whether to fire Rodriguez, who was 15-
22 after three seasons running college football’s winningest program. The
person spoke on condition of anonymity because the details of the evaluation
were supposed to remain confidential.
Wolverines defensive back James Rogers said a Tuesday night team meeting was
postponed until Wednesday afternoon, pushing back a gathering Rodriguez
traditionally has the night before classes resume each semester. | b**j
