It was fitting perhaps that just as the long-awaited Heisman Trophy ceremony
was coming on television
from New York and Cameron Newton would finally get his moment in the sun,
the ESPN ticker below the
screen went from black to red and a more momentous story had broken.
Florida had hired Will Muschamp.
Suddenly, the pro-Newton crowd along with those who have shot arrows through
his candidacy had moved
on. However, the stench of the story about Newton's recruitment remains. And
while it seems that nearly
everyone has lost something, there have been a few bright spots along the
way. Today, we take a quick
snapshot of the winners and losers of one of the most compelling college
football stories of our time.
Cam Newton: Winner ... Say what you want, but this 21-year-old Heisman
Trophy winner has taken more
hits than any young player in recent history. Grown men in the news media
have called him scandalous
names, attempted to eviscerate his reputation, left him off Heisman ballots
and All-America teams. Yet, he's
still standing, smiling and holding back the tears. I think he has been a
remarkable profile in courage, and
should he be able to outrun the critics and his past -- as well as the
Oregon linebackers in Glendale -- his
story in college football will be one of legend.
Cecil Newton: Loser ... Sadly, the same can't be said for Newton's old man.
There is almost no way for the
Atlanta minister to talk his way out of the mess he created for his son, but
it would make for a riveting "60
Minutes" interview. Until then, his name will remain soiled.
Jay Jacobs: Winner ... Long considered by many to be a pawn of the trustees,
Auburn's athletic director has
been perhaps the biggest surprise in this episode. In the early days of the
story when Auburn's crisis
management looked chaotic, Jacobs remained calm, quietly navigating the
school through the storm. His
hiring two years ago this week of Gene Chizik doesn't look too bad, either.
Gene Chizik: Winner ... Remember this quote from sports author and historian
Keith Dunnavant on Dec. 16,
2008 in this space: "I believe it's the worst hire in the history of the SEC
." Dunnavant wasn't alone. Most of
us in the media were in shock over the Chizik hire. Today Chizik is the
national coach of the year. But what
I'll remember most about him this year was his passionate defense of Newton
and the aplomb he has
displayed throughout this tumultuous season.
Mike Slive: Hung Jury ... The gentle and dignified SEC commissioner has been
thrust into the center of this
towering inferno. After seemingly vaporizing during the controversy, being
noticeably absent at several
high-profile SEC games -- including the Iron Bowl -- Slive emerged on the
day of the NCAA's ruling with a
stinging rebuke of Cecil Newton and the Mississippi State booster, Kenny
Rogers. Behind the scenes, most
believed Slive's vast experience as a lawyer and his enormous power in
intercollegiate athletics helped
broker the deal to keep Newton eligible. However, the public rebuke by four
major college commissioners
has put Slive all alone on a desolate island.
Urban Meyer: Loser ... His petty voting of Auburn No. 2 on the final coaches
' ballot, coupled with his
disingenuous comments about Newton throughout the process, has put the now-
outgoing Florida coach in
a peculiar position. Clearly, Meyer looks bad now considering he had Newton
on campus and was seemingly
so smitten by Tim Tebow's talents he didn't realize or care what he had.
Dan Mullen: Loser ... Here is a one of college football's hottest young
coaches and he can't twist or turn fast
enough to get away from the blinding spotlight of this story. We know Newton
called him and gave the bad
news he was going to Auburn over Mississippi State. And now, it seems likely
the source of ESPN's now
infamous story, quoting Newton saying: "the money was too much," at Auburn
may have been residing at
Mullen's house. When State visits Auburn next September, don't expect Mullen
to get a friendly ovation.

indeed,
谁会被钉在历史的耻辱柱上?
谁会被钉在历史的不清不白之柱上?
谁的名字会总是带个星号?
照这个Writer的逻辑,Cam可以说是“随万夫所指,我亦行矣!” (something like
that, I
forget the exact quote or who said it, 呵呵)
