A man claiming to have represented Cam Newton during his recruitment
out of Blinn (Texas) Junior College last year was shopping Newton to
multiple schools, including Mississippi State, for six-figure
compensation, an ESPN.com report said Thursday.
A source close to Auburn’s athletic department with knowledge of the
situation told the Opelika-Auburn News on Thursday that “there are no
NCAA allegations against any member of Auburn’s coaching staff or
anyone associated with Auburn in the recruitment of Cam Newton.”
The source chose to remain anonymous because the NCAA strongly
encouraged the school not to comment on the matter.
Kirk Sampson, Auburn assistant AD for media relations released a
statement Thursday saying, “Cam Newton is eligible to play football at
Auburn,” and declining further comment.
Tigers head coach Gene Chizik echoed those sentiments at his weekly
“Tiger Talk” radio show at the Ariccia restaurant at The Hotel at
Auburn University.
“Unfortunately, I can’t comment,” Chizik said. “But here’s what I can
say, and I’ll say this very loud and very clear: Cameron Newton is
eligible at Auburn University. Period.
“End of story,” Chizik concluded, as the fans eating dinner drowned
out his last three words with applause.
Chizik went through his normal paces on the radio show, fielding fan
questions, signing autographs, posing for pictures and cracking jokes
before being whisked away out of the loading-dock exit after the show
wrapped up.
An Auburn spokesman made it clear Chizik was in a hurry to keep a
previously scheduled speaking engagement at the “Ignite Auburn” event,
and his briskness had nothing to do with the Newton story.
Sources told ESPN.com that Kenny Rogers, who played at Mississippi
State from 1982-85, said he represented Newton during his recruitment
and was putting a lofty price on his head for any school that wished
to sign the 6-foot-6, 250-pound quarterback.
Rogers operates a Chicago-based company called Elite Football
Preparation, which holds camps around the country.
Former Bulldogs quarterback John Bond, who played with Rogers, told
ESPN.com that Rogers contacted him shortly after Newton’s official
visit to Starkville last December.
Bond said the former teammate told him schools had offered as high as
$200,000 for Newton, but the Bulldogs could have him for $180,000
because of Newton’s prior relationship with head coach Dan Mullen.
“We are comfortable that representatives of Mississippi State
University’s interests conducted themselves appropriately and in
compliance with all NCAA by-laws,” Mississippi State said in a
statement to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.
“Mississippi State is committed to operating our athletics programs
within the rules of the NCAA and Southeastern Conference, and we
expect those affiliated with our program to continue to do the same.“
The AU source said, “There is no evidence whatsoever of any contact at
all between Kenny Rogers and Auburn’s staff.”
Cecil Newton, Cam’s father, told ESPN.com he first met Rogers two
years ago and had talked to Rogers on several occasions, but never met
him until Cam Newton’s official visit to Starkville.
He denied any wrongdoing by his son or his family, and he said the
family was retaining a lawyer to “protect our interests.”
“They’re unfounded allegations,” Cecil told the Opelika-Auburn News.
“It’s real, real terrible timing of whoever it is behind this.”
Cam Newton is one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy in his
first season with the Tigers, and has led them to an undefeated record
with 2,695 yards of total offense and a program-record 30 touchdowns
accounted for.
He was unavailable for comment Thursday.
Cecil Newton told ESPN.com the family received a letter from the NCAA
“about a month ago” asking for financial statements. The athletic
department source said Auburn knew about the situation before
Thursday.
“We are cooperating with the investigation,” Cecil told the Opelika-
Auburn News. “And the investigation will reveal nothing happened.”
