You are subscribed to the Frequent Miler advanced email list either because
you selected the appropriate box when you signed up for my email newsletter
or because you signed up for daily blog emails when you signed up for the

hopefully!). If you do not want to receive advanced emails like this one,

Read on only if you're interested in truly advanced stuff:
The Deal
Currently, there are a number of overlapping deals that can be combined to
make magic:
Discover It: Double all rewards for a full year
Discover Deals portal: 20% cash back at 1800Baskets (through the end of
August)
Discover Deals portal: 10% cash back at Sears and Kmart (through the end
of August)
Sears Shop Your Way Rewards: Double partner points, including 40% back
in points for 1800Baskets purchases (through the end of July)
The Discover Deals portal doesn't seem to care if you pay with a non-
Discover credit card. In very rare cases people have said that their cash
back has been reversed, but most people do this often without trouble.
Assuming you have a Discover It card registered in the Double Cash Back
promo, here's one way to combine the above deals to get almost anything for
free and get free miles:
Make sure you are a member of Sears' SYW (Shop Your Way) Rewards.
Register a Visa or MasterCard credit card for SYW partner points.
Registered cards will automatically earn SYW points from certain SYW
partners, including 1800Baskets.
Go to Discover Deals, find 1800Baskets and click through for 20% cash
back.
Buy Gift Cards to be delivered by mail. They will appear to be
1800Flowers gift cards because they are really the same company. Important:
Pay with the Visa or MasterCard credit card registered to SYW Rewards. You
only have until the end of this month to complete this step because the
double SYW promotion ends July 31.
When the gift cards arrive, click through Discover Deals again to
1800Baskets.
Make sure you are a member of their Celebration Rewards program
Make sure that you have a Celebrations Passport for free shipping (you
can pay for Passport with a gift card for about $30).
Use the remaining gift cards to buy anything that a charity might like.
Donate those things to charity.
From the purchase of gift cards, you should have received 40% back in
SYW points. Go through Discover Deals to Sears or Kmart to buy whatever you
want. Only items sold by Sears/Kmart are eligible for SYW points. Pay
with SYW points.
Eventually you'll get $20 in 1800Flowers Celebration Rewards dollars for
each $200 you spent. You can use those credits to buy things you want from
the 1800 collection of stores or again donate to charity. This time, use a
promo code to earn miles! Examples that might work: RR59 or RR60 for 30
Southwest points per dollar; AKA3 for 30 Alaska miles per dollar (I haven't
verified that these codes still work, but it should be obvious when you
input then whether they're working or not)
How does this work out to free stuff from Sears/Kmart and free miles?
Let's say you follow the above steps by spending $1000 initially on
1800Baskets gift cards:
Earn $400 in SYW points when you purchase $1000 in gift cards using your
registered credit card (as long as you make that purchase before the end of
the month)
Earn $200 in Discover Cash Back when buying the gift cards (because you
clicked through the portal)
Earn $40 in Discover Cash Back when you use the $400 in SYW points at
Sears or Kmart (after clicking through the Discover Deals portal)
Earn $200 in Discover Cash Back when you click through Discover Deals to
1800Baskets to donate stuff to charity (and pay with gift cards)
Earn up to $100 in Celebration Rewards dollars.
Earn 30 miles per dollar when spending those Celebration Rewards dollars
= up to 3000 miles.
All Discover Cash Back is doubled at the end of the year.
Total Discover Cash Back earned: $440 x 2 = $880
After $1000 spend you should receive a total of $880 back. Plus, all of
those donations to charity should be tax deductible. Most people who
itemize their charitable contributions will save much more than $120 in
taxes for $1000 or more in donations.
Many other variations
I'll leave it to the reader to come up with other variations of this combo
deal. Those who resell stuff, for example, can clearly come out way ahead.
I believe there are also great opportunities here to go for a Southwest
Companion Pass by using the gift cards with Southwest promo codes.
Or, instead of earning miles in the final step, go through Discover Deals to
get more cash back. In my past experiments with 1800Flowers, you can earn
either portal rewards or points/miles using promo codes, but not both.
A lot can go wrong
This is an "advanced email list" for a reason. Many things can go wrong
with the above plan. Please only take it on if you fully understand the
approach and fully understand the risks!
Personally, I'm not sure I'm going to do the above steps myself. I have a
few more days to decide. Is it worth the risk? Maybe not. But, its fun to
think of the possibilities!
