Sorrento Therapeutics Licenses 30-Minute Spit Test for Covid-19
A small biotech called Sorrento Therapeutics announced Wednesday that it had
licensed a Covid-19 test from Columbia University that, according to a
small study, can provide highly accurate results in thirty minutes using
only a person’s saliva.

In an interview Monday, Sorrento (ticker: SRNE) CEO Dr. Henry Ji said that
the test could eventually be used to test people before they fly on
airplanes, attend sporting events, or stay at a hotel.
“You could open up the whole country, the whole society,” Ji said.
Unlike other rapid point of care diagnostic tests, like the ID NOW from
Abbott Laboratories (ABT), the Sorrento test doesn’t run on a specialized
machine, and doesn’t require a nasal swab. It does need to be kept at a
constant, specific temperature for 30 minutes.
A paper by the Columbia University Medical Center team that developed the
test, published in June on a so-called preprint server and not yet peer
reviewed, said that the test had a true positive rate of 97%, and a true
negative rate of 100%, based on 60 samples. Abbott’s point of care test has
been bedeviled by questions about its accuracy, and the Food and Drug
Administration has issued a warning that the test could return false
negatives, though Abbott stands by the system.
Another saliva test that received emergency use authorization from the Food
and Drug Administration in May needs to be shipped to a lab to be processed.
Sorrento says it plans to gather samples to validate the test over the
coming weeks, and then submit it to the FDA for an emergency use
authorization. The company’s senior vice president and head of regulatory
affairs and quality, Mark Brunswick, says that the company plans to price
the test inexpensively: “It’s going to be equivalent to one, two, three,
four cups of coffee, not much more than that,” Brunswick said. “Something
that people would be amenable to having done to them more than once a week.”
Sorrento is a cancer-focused biotech that has made an abrupt turn in recent
months. The company has issued a string of news releases announcing new
Covid-19 programs, including another diagnostic test called COVI-TRACK that
it submitted for emergency use authorization last month. On May 21, it
announced it had acquired rights to a drug called abivertinib, which it said
July 20 it had received FDA clearance to test in Covid-19 patients. It has
also said it is developing antibodies to target Covid-19.
“This has changed the whole game,” Ji says. “Covid-19 changed everything.”
In May, the company faced criticism for media comments about its Covid-19
antibody program. Shares rose 158% on May 15 after Fox News published a
story about Sorrento’s antibody program, quoting Ji saying that “there is
a cure” to Covid-19.
Days later, on May 19 the stock fell 16%, after the biotech-focused outlet
Endpoints News called attention to criticism from experts over how Ji had
described the company’s progress.
In an interview days later with another biotech industry publication called
BioSpace Ji defended his comments, and said he had not described the
antibody his company had discovered as a cure.
Still, the stock is up 129.4% so far this year. The company has a market
capitalization of $1.6 billion. Only two analysts tracked by FactSet
maintain coverage of Sorrento; both have Buy ratings on the stock.
