Carolina,
My name is Will Norfleet, and I am the son-in-law of the late Dr. Feng Liu,
formerly of Durham. I'm sure many of you remember the death of my father-in-
law on July 23, 2014. He was beaten to death during a robbery just outside
the UNC Chapel Hill campus. At the time, your organization came out in an
amazing show of support. You organized a candlelight vigil, and came out in
large numbers to stand up for Dr. Liu and honor his memory. for this his
daugher, Pai Liu; his wife, Xing Yuan; and myself are forever grateful.
Ever since Feng Liu's beating death, the two individuals responsible have
been in the Orange County jail awaiting trial. The first trial, for Troy
Arrington Jr is set to begin March 6 at the Orange County courthouse in
Hillsborough, and should last about two weeks. I'm going to try and be there
for the entire trial, but Pai and Xing may not be able to attend much of it
due to childcare and work constraints. The three of us live in Asheville,
NC and are busy raising our 2 year old daughter, Keelin. The saddest part of
Feng Liu's death was that he died just three months before Keelin, his
first grandchild, was born.
I'm writing to request that members of your organization attend the trial.
The District Attorney, Jim Woodall, tells me that it's always helpful to the
prosecution to have a large turnout in support of the victim. I realize
your members are very busy people, but any number of people attending the
trial for any number of days would be much appreciated. A show of support
from the Chinese American community could have an effect on the jury. Mr.
Woodall says he has a strong case, and aims to put Arrington in prison for
life. I'm just trying to do everything I can to ensure that justice is
served, so that other families can avoid similar tragedies. Please send me
