Sunday as a Chinese container ship becomes the first commercial vessel to
attempt the passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific through the

On April 29, China COSCO Shipping Corp. singed an official contract with the
Panama Canal Administration, winning the maiden voyage in the expanded
canal for its Andronnikos bulk container ship.
The Chinese ship is slated to sail from the newly built canal lock dubbed
Agua Clara into the canal, and then sail through the canal before entering
the Pacific Ocean via the Cocoli lock, to complete its inaugural sail.
But if Beijing decides to cancel the maiden voyage of the Chinese container
ship before May 10, then another container ship dubbed Thalatta and owned by
Norway's Wallenius Wihemsen Lines will replace the Chinese ship, so as to
mitigate the impact of a possible boycott by Beijing, Lorge Luis Quijano,
chief of Panama Canal Administration was cited as saying in the report. | b***y
