with twelve employees at its peak, invent the drug sofosbuvir, its effective
treatment for hepatitis C? The answer is, it didn't. Sofusbuvir is a drug
that is made using 20 year old unpatented Protide technology. Merck has
sued Gilead Science (which bought Pharmasett for $11 billion in 2013),
claiming it had developed sofusbuvir. Round one has gone to Merck.
The record shows that Pharmasett, founded in 1998 by Raymond Schinazi and
Dennis Liotta, scientists at Emory University, did the clinical research on
the pre-existing drug sofusbuvir at the Veteran's Administration hospital in
Atlanta to show that sofusbuvir was a very effective treatment for
hepatitis C. The drug itself had not been patented by its original
developers at the University of Cardiff. How the FDA helped Pharmasett a
drug patent should be a matter for a criminal trial, to determine how much
Pharmasett paid top FDA officials to classify Pharmasett's version of
sofusbuvir, Sovaldi, as a new drug.
