If the US gov. can incite the Chinese so they make a misstep and invade
Taiwan or annex the Senkaku islands (any scenario that can plausibly "
embroil" the US in a war with China would do), the American military
establishment and the legion of defense contractors will be very very happy.
The US Navy's submarine fleet alone has the capacity to destroy the entire
Chinese navy and merchant marine in less than 48 hours. Just finished
reading a defense paper on exactly this scenario in my foreign policy class.
When you take into consideration that the US debt is just paper money,
nobody has the military might to enforce payment of the principal. It is
entirely plausible that the yearly interest payments are made simply to
entice/entangle US enemies further. Imagine a bank has lent a single
customer $5 trillion dollars who just happens to have the world's largest
military run by men steeped in a history and culture in love with bloodshed.
Not a very enforceable loan, is it? As well, what happens to the bank when
the customer defaults?
In other words, there is a whole different way to look at what is happening
in Asia re: US foreign policy's true strategic objectives... |
