The modernisation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will remain
on track despite the anticipated economic impact of Typhoon Haiyan,
Philippine Air Force (PAF) spokesman Colonel Miguel Okol told IHS Jane's on
12 November.
Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines' central islands on 8 November and caused
devastation, killing more than an estimated 10,000 people to make it the
country's worst natural disaster. Damage caused by the storm is estimated to
cost between USD12 billion and USD14 billion, or up to 5% of gross domestic
product (GDP).
Despite this, Col Okol was adamant that the modernisation of the AFP would
not be affected, including those programmes close to finalisation, such as
the PAF's acquisition of 12 FA-50 light attack aircraft from Korea Aerospace
Industries for USD300 million and the Philippine Navy's (PN's) recently
launched project to purchase two light frigates for about USD420 million. | g**1
