three months ago."

EXCLUSIVE: Snowden sought Booz Allen job to gather evidence on NSA
surveillance
Edward Snowden tells the Post he took a job at NSA contractor Booz Allen
Hamilton to collect proof of surveillance programme.
Edward Snowden secured a job with a US government contractor for one reason
alone – to obtain evidence on Washington’s cyberspying networks, the South
China Morning Post can reveal.
For the first time, Snowden has admitted he sought a position at Booz Allen
Hamilton so he could collect proof about the US National Security Agency’s
secret surveillance programmes ahead of planned leaks to the media.
“My position with Booz Allen Hamilton granted me access to lists of
machines all over the world the NSA hacked,” he told the Post on June 12.
“That is why I accepted that position about three months ago.”
During a global online chat last week, Snowden also stated he took pay cuts
“in the course of pursuing specific work”.
His admission comes as US officials voiced anger at Hong Kong, and
indirectly Beijing, after the whistle-blower was allowed to leave the city
on Sunday.
Snowden is understood to be heading for Ecuador to seek political asylum
with the help of WikiLeaks, which claimed to have secured his safe passage
to the South American country.
Snowden, who arrived in Hong Kong on May 20, first contacted documentary
maker Laura Poitras in January, claiming to have information about the
intelligence community. But it was several months later before Snowden met
Poitras and two British reporters in the city.
He spent the time collecting a cache of classified documents as a computer
systems administrator at Booz Allen Hamilton.
In his interview with the Post, Snowden divulged information that he claimed
showed hacking by the NSA into computers in Hong Kong and mainland China.
“I did not release them earlier because I don’t want to simply dump huge
amounts of documents without regard to their content,” he said.
“I have to screen everything before releasing it to journalists.”
Asked if he specifically went to Booz Allen Hamilton to gather evidence of
surveillance, he replied: “Correct on Booz.”
His intention was to collect information about the NSA hacking into “the
whole world” and “not specifically Hong Kong and China”.
The documents he divulged to the Post were obtained during his tenure at
Booz Allen Hamilton in April, he said.
He also signalled his intention to leak more of those documents at a later
date.
“If I have time to go through this information, I would like to make it
available to journalists in each country to make their own assessment,
independent of my bias, as to whether or not the knowledge of US network
operations against their people should be published.”
Two days after Snowden broke cover in Hong Kong as the source of the NSA
leaks, Booz Allen Hamilton sacked him.

Edward Snowden Says He Sought Booz Allen Hamilton Job To Gather NSA
Surveillance Evidence
The Huffington Post | By Mollie Reilly
Posted: 06/24/2013 12:54 pm EDT | Updated: 06/24/2013 4:11 pm EDT
Edward Snowden, the former government contractor who leaked information on
the National Security Agency's surveillance programs, says he sought the job
with Booz Allen Hamilton to gather evidence on the agency's data collection
networks.
In a June 12 interview with the South China Morning Post published Monday,
Snowden, who previously worked as a CIA technician, said he took the
position with the intention of collecting information on the NSA.
“My position with Booz Allen Hamilton granted me access to lists of
machines all over the world the NSA hacked,” he said. “That is why I
accepted that position about three months ago.”
SCMP reports:
Asked if he specifically went to Booz Allen Hamilton to gather evidence of
surveillance, he replied: “Correct on Booz.”
His intention was to collect information about the NSA hacking into “the
whole world” and “not specifically Hong Kong and China”.
The documents he divulged to the Post were obtained during his tenure at
Booz Allen Hamilton in April, he said.
Snowden also told the Hong Kong newspaper that he intends to leak more
documents on the NSA's programs.
Last week, Reuters reported that Booz Allen Hamilton hired Snowden despite
finding possible discrepancies in his resume. The Senate has also launched
an investigation into USIS, the government contractor that vetted Snowden in
2011.
"We are limited in what we can say about this investigation because it is an
ongoing criminal matter," Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said of the
investigation. "But it is a reminder that background investigations can have
real consequences for our national security."
According to the latest reports, Snowden has left Hong Kong and is believed
to be in Russia. Snowden reportedly did not make a Monday flight to Cuba as
planned.
During a Monday conference call with reporters, WikiLeaks founder Julian
Assange said Snowden is "safe and healthy," but would not give further
details on his whereabouts.

一名搭乘SU150的记者以“@SnowdensSeat(斯诺登的座位)”为名在twitter上注册

www.6park.com
www.6park.com
www.6park.
com
www.6park.com
www.6park.com
www.6park.com
www.6park.com
www.6park.com
www.6park.com
www.6park.com
www.6park.com
www.6park.com

http://www.wenxuecity.com/news/2013/07/16/2519867.html

Ex-President Carter: “The invasion of privacy has gone too far”
The Obama administration tried to placate Europe’s anger over spying
programs. Not as ex-President Jimmy Carter: The Democrat attacked the U.S.
intelligence sharp. The disclosure by whistleblowers Snowden was “useful.”
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was in the wake of the NSA Spä
hskandals criticized the American political system. ”America has no
functioning democracy,” Carter said Tuesday at a meeting of the “Atlantic
Bridge” in Atlanta.
Previously, the Democrat had been very critical of the practices of U.S.
intelligence. ”I think the invasion of privacy has gone too far,” Carter
told CNN. ”And I think that is why the secrecy was excessive.” Overlooking
the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden said Carter, whose revelations were
long “likely to be useful because they inform the public.”Carter has
repeatedly warned that the United States sharply declined due to excessive
restriction of civil rights, their moral authority. Last year he wrote in an
article in the “New York Times”, new U.S. laws “never before seen breach
our privacy by the government” allowed the.
Carter was the 39th President of the United States, who ruled from 1977
until 1981. During his tenure, he tried to align U.S. foreign policy that is
more about human rights – after his retirement from active politics for
his humanitarian work, he received the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize .
In Atlanta, he also expressed his overall pessimistic about the global
situation. There is currently no reason for him to be optimistic, Carter
said, referring to the situation in Egypt, which had fallen into a military
dictatorship. He also lamented the growing political divide in the United
States, the excessive influence of money in U.S. election campaigns and the
confusing American election rules. The ex-president whose “Carter Center”
operates worldwide including election monitoring, announced skeptical
whether the United States, the standard that applies when reviewing the
Center of elections might be fulfilled. As a bright spot, however, Carter
called the triumph of modern technology that would have caused some of the
countries of the Arab Spring of democratic progress. Exactly these
developments but are endangered by the NSA Spähskandal as major U.S.
Internet platforms such as Google or Facebook lose credibility worldwide.

Jimmy Carter Says NSA Surveillance Has Killed Democracy; Didn’t Notice
Other Suspects Holding Bloody Axes (Updated)
by Kris E. Benson
JIMMEHJimmy Carter, your Wonkette’s favorite elder statesman, caused a bit
of a kerfuffle with statements made at a closed-door event in Atlanta for an
Atlantic Bridge meeting:
No, the kerfuffle was not caused by Jimmy Carter speaking German at the
Atlantic Bridge meeting; it is in German because no American press outlets
showed up to cover the event. The kerfuffle resulted from the English
translation of Der Spiegel‘s German translation of Jimmy Carter’s speech,
as well as the context within which it was said. From HuffPo:
Former President Jimmy Carter announced support for NSA whistleblower Edward
Snowden this week, saying that his uncovering of the agency’s massive
surveillance programs had proven “beneficial” …
“America does not have a functioning democracy at this point in time,”
Carter said, according to a translation by Inquisitr.
UPDATED BELOW: Would you believe Jimmy Carter’s cool grandson, JE Carter IV
, says nuh uh, never happened?
On one hand, we love Jimmy Carter. On the other, we disagree with his
analysis that democracy was compromised by PRISM, so we have a bit of a
quandary. See, for the past couple decades we’ve been living in an era of
widespread gerrymandering, a loophole-ridden tax system that allows
companies like GE to avoid paying any taxes at all, and a bifurcated legal
system that rarely holds elites accountable for even the most egregious
examples of wrongdoing. So no disrespect to Jimmy Carter, our favorite ex-
President, but democracy was already bleeding out when PRISM was being
developed.
In June, while Snowden was scrambling to send out asylum requests from an
airport in Russia, Carter appeared to back the former NSA contractor’s
efforts to remain out of U.S. custody.
“He’s obviously violated the laws of America, for which he’s responsible,
but I think the invasion of human rights and American privacy has gone too
far,” he told CNN, saying that nations were within their right to offer
asylum to Snowden. “I think that the secrecy that has been surrounding this
invasion of privacy has been excessive, so I think that the bringing of it
to the public notice has probably been, in the long term, beneficial.”
Beneficial to WHOM, Jimmy Carter? The terrorists? Because it has definitely
benefited the terrorists, we don’t know how it has benefited them because
that’s classified. And we don’t know which terrorists it has benefitted
because that is also classified. Come to think of it, does democracy benefit
the terrorists? Not sure, that’s classified, but better get rid of it just
in case.
UPDATE! James E. Carter IV pinged us to be all “nope.”
So was it incorrectly translated, or just completely incorrect period?
Because the English translation from the German translation is correct, and
presumably the German translation from the English was correct. (Those
Germans, with their fancy “multilingual education.”) Was it made up
completely? Taken out of context? Translated technically correctly but
robbed of nuance or what?
No, says Carter. “[The quote] is just wrong. He didn’t say anything that
he hadn’t said before about NSA/Snowden
I asked.”
Well, SOMEBODY is a liar here, and we are going to state without anything to
back it up whatsoever that it is neither Jimmy Carter nor his grandson,
because of radness.

Military analyst Daniel Ellsberg leaked the 7,000-page Pentagon Papers in 1971. The top-secret documents revealed that senior American leaders, including three presidents, knew the Vietnam War was an unwinnable, tragic quagmire. Further, they showed that the government had lied to Congress and the public about the progress of the war. Ellsberg surrendered to authorities and was charged as a spy. During his trial, the court learned that President Richard Nixon's administration had embarked on a campaign to discredit Ellsberg, illegally wiretapping him and breaking into his psychiatrist's office. All charges against him were dropped. Since then he has lived a relatively quiet life as a respected author and lecturer. STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Michael Hayden: Snowden will likely be most damaging leaker in American
history
He says the large trove of data reveals how America collects much of its
intelligence
Hayden says U.S. economic rivals will use it to disadvantage American
companies
He says other nations will doubt whether the U.S. can do anything in secret
Editor's note: Gen. Michael V. Hayden, a former NSA director who was
appointed by President George W. Bush as CIA director in 2006 and served
until February 2009, is a principal with the Chertoff Group, a security
consulting firm. He serves on the boards of several defense firms and is a
distinguished visiting professor at George Mason University.
(CNN) -- Edward Snowden will likely prove to be the most costly leaker of
American secrets in the history of the Republic.
I know that we have had our share of spies.
Benedict Arnold was bent on betraying the garrison at West Point to the
British during the Revolution. Klaus Fuchs and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg
ferreted out nuclear secrets for the Russians. Aldrich Ames and Robert
Hanssen identified American penetrations for ultimate execution by the
Soviets.
We have also had our share of leakers.
Daniel Ellsberg copied thousands of pages of documents related to the
Vietnam War. Bradley Manning is accused of indiscriminately scoured the
Defense Department's SIPRNET (Secret Internet Protocol Router Network) for
all manner of military reports and diplomatic cables.
Michael Hayden
Michael Hayden
But Snowden is in a class by himself.
The secrets that Arnold wanted to betray fit into the heel of the boot of
his British case officer. The "atom bomb" spies reported out using secret
ink. Ellsberg was limited to the number of documents he could physically
Xerox. Manning, although fully empowered by digital media, had access only
to a secret level network housing largely tactical information.
Snowden fled to China with several computers' worth of data from NSANET, one
of the most highly classified and sensitive networks in American
intelligence. The damage is potentially so great that NSA has taken one of
its most respected senior operations officers off mission tasks to lead the
damage assessment effort.
In general terms, it's already clear Snowden's betrayal hurts in at least
three important ways.
First, there is the undeniable operational effect of informing adversaries
of American intelligence's tactics, techniques and procedures. Snowden's
disclosures go beyond the "what" of a particular secret or source. He is
busily revealing the "how" of American collection.
The Guardian newspaper's Glenn Greenwald, far more deserving of the Justice
Department's characterization of a co-conspirator than Fox's James Rosen
ever was, claims that Snowden has documents that comprise "basically the
instruction manual for how the NSA is built. ... [To prove] what he was
saying was true, he had to take ... very sensitive, detailed blueprints of
how the NSA does what they do."
Greenwald has disputed the notion that he aided Snowden, telling David
Gregory on NBC's "Meet the Press": "The assumption in your question, David,
is completely without evidence, the idea I've aided and abetted him in any
way."
And Michael Clemente, Fox News' executive vice president of news, has said,
"we are outraged to learn ... that James Rosen was named a criminal co-
conspirator for simply doing his job as a reporter."
Greenwald: Snowden is 'the classically responsible whistle-blower'
Watch this video
Reporter: Snowden a responsible whistleblower
Watch this video
Will Snowden release more intelligence?
Absent "rogue" U.S. action to silence him, Snowden has promised not to
reveal this data, but there are already reports of counterterrorism targets
changing their communications patterns. And I would lose all respect for
China's Ministry of State Security and Russia's FSB if they have not already
fully harvested Snowden's digital data trove.
As former director of CIA, I would claim that the top 20% of American
intelligence -- that exquisite insight into an enemy's intentions -- is
generally provided by human sources. But as a former director of NSA, I
would also suggest that the base 50% to 60% of American intelligence day in
and day out is provided by signals intelligence, the kinds of intercepted
communications that Snowden has so blithely put at risk.
But there is other damage, such as the undeniable economic punishment that
will be inflicted on American businesses for simply complying with American
law.
Others, most notably in Europe, will rend their garments in faux shock and
outrage that these firms have done this, all the while ignoring that these
very same companies, along with their European counterparts, behave the same
way when confronted with the lawful demands of European states.
The real purpose of those complaints is competitive economic advantage,
putting added burdens on or even disqualifying American firms competing in
Europe for the big data and cloud services that are at the cutting edge of
the global IT industry. Or, in the case of France, to slow negotiations on a
trans- Atlantic trade agreement that threatens the privileged position of
French agriculture, outrage more based on protecting the production of
cheese than preventing any alleged violation of privacy.
The third great harm of Snowden's efforts to date is the erosion of
confidence in the ability of the United States to do anything discreetly or
keep anything secret.
Manning's torrent of disclosures certainly caused great harm, but there was
at least the plausible defense that this was a one-off phenomenon, a
regrettable error we're aggressively correcting.
Snowden shows that we have fallen short and that the issue may be more
systemic rather than isolated. At least that's what I would fear if I were a
foreign intelligence chief approached by the Americans to do anything of
import.
Snowden seems undeterred by any of these consequences. After all, he
believes he is acting for a higher good -- an almost romantic attachment to
the merits of absolute transparency -- and he seems indifferent to the
legitimacy of any claims of national security.
The appropriate balance between liberty and security has bedeviled free
peoples, including Americans, for centuries. But it takes a special kind of
arrogance for this young man to believe that his moral judgment on the
dilemma suddenly trumps that of two (incredibly different) presidents, both
houses of the U.S. Congress, both political parties, the U.S. court system
and more than 30,000 of his co-workers.
Arrogant or not, Snowden has thrust into public view sensitive and
controversial espionage activities. So what of his facts, fictions and fears
and of the national debate that he claims he intended to stimulate?
