hatred of the book does not stem from the Fang Zhouzi report, and you have
given the book an honest chance, then please forgive my initial statement
about Chinese nationalists.

"#4 The book never states the Chinese govt sent her to America." ---- Erica,
I am disappointed. Enlighten me, since you have read the book, how do you
interpret this sentence: When I was 25 years old, the Chinese government
quietly deported me, which happens to be the first sentence of the entire
book.
You have, in the very first post of this thread, put your profession at
stake, so I am expecting some quality research work here.

Please, Erica, do a research to find out who Fang Zhouzi is (you can't even
spell his name right) and what he has been doing.
Also, please do send a book to Mr. Fang.
Erica,

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on, you can not comment the straight words coming out from Ms. Ping Fu'
s mouth, but you have been so supportive and defensive for a book full of
lies. And, we are still not clear how this book was completed and who "
helped" to complete this book. I hope you are not one of those people behind
this book, but, we can wonder....
BTW, how did they twist the story, by forcing Ms.ping Fu to tell another lie
???
lol...............

Xianyi says:
Dear Erica,
Do you think you are the only professor teaching Chinese history here? Come
on, show me your knowledge on American historiography on the Cultural
Revolution and show me your expertise in oral history, Foucaultdian theory,
memory and identity. You simply dismiss all the discussants here because you
cannot answer one important question:
When you said you were a Princeton PhD in Chinese history, did you reveal
your personal relationship with the author? Is that something we as
historians should do? What kind of response can you get if you post the
whole thread to H-ASIA? Do you dare to say the same words to your colleagues
there?
In addition, most of the posters are living in the States. We have lived
here even for decades. Do you still believe that we are brainwashed by the
Communist government in China? Where is the human agency? When the
subalterns challenge your privileged position, you start to ignore their
voices? To be honest, you know why Ms. Fu can publish her book and be
interviewed by NPR, right? It is all about power! Power, connections, and
hegemony in modern business-driven society, which is penetrated by "public"
media. In China, it is the notorious "guanxi", but in this country it
becomes the perfect way of "networking"? Controlling the thoughts of
American people, then you can do whatever you want. Do not be a preacher,
but a practitioner of what you teach everyday.
Best,
Xianyi

Thomas Miller says:
Early today, she claimed that she learnt a lot of languages. Since she claim
to have a degree in Chinese history, I assume she learnt a little bit
Chinese. Seems I am wrong, and I have no idea how she conducted independent
and innovative research which lead to a PhD degree from Princeton.....
Erica Brindley says:
In fact, 7 and 1/2 years is considered fast for those of us working
seriously on Asia. There are a lot of languages to learn, and a lot of
sources to read, as you well know!

Erica Brindley says:
I have read the book, have you? As for the online interviews, I cannot
comment. I have heard that they have twisted the story and that Zhou Fangzi
is trying to rip into anything that doesn't present China in a favorable
light. But the main point is that there is much in there that simply cannot
be "fact-checked." It is a personal statement, a bunch of memories - she is
not presenting this as history but as something she lived through - a
mentalscape - and as such, it may contain some forgivable factual errors.
How can one verify that she was or was not raped back then? How can one
verify that she was not locked up by authorities for 3 days? How can you
verify that the bizarre incident with the Vietnamese man did not occur when
she arrived in New Mexico? These are all very personal incidents that may
well have taken place and carry a certain believability. I do not see the
point in demonizing her through a misguided witch-hunt, especially if it
turns out to be the case that her story is true. And, as a stranger, I would
not want to be the one to tell someone who had been raped that she had not
been.
