wishes of billions around the globe, she is gone.
You probably know whom I am referring to. She was the two-year-old
bundle of joy in Foshan who, in a matter of seven minutes, was reduced
to a heart-breaking picture of broken bones and flesh, captured on a
blurry surveillance video. With that, she became a symbol of all that
have gone wrong with the Chinese society, a society that for thousands
of years has been known for its warm social traditions, for its emphasis
on human interaction, and for its dedication to poetry, arts, and ethics
over science and technology.
The last time she was seen as her normal self, she was wandering
carelessly onto a narrow, dark street, but she was in a familiar
neighborhood, only meters away from the storefront where her parents
worked, surrounded by family, friends, and acquaintances. She was
about the same size as my own daughter, and was even wearing an
outfit, with a black top and purple pants, that is strikingly similar to one
that my daughter claims to be among her favorite. What happened next,
though, was something nobody in his/her right mind would wish upon
the young daughter of even his/her worst enemy.
Experts say that the first encounter with the first vehicle was probably
severe enough to have killed her. In all likelihood, they are right. But
the lasting image from this incident will always be that of her tiny body
lying in a pool of blood, on the cold, hard pavement, feebly crying and
waving her little arms in vain, while nearly 20 people strolled by, seeing
nothing, hearing nothing, and saying nothing. In the middle of all this,
a second vehicle drove by and nonchalantly ran over her legs again.
For seven long minutes, she must have felt like being on an entirely
different planet, where she was the only living, breathing creature, as
much as she was actually close to death. She called out for help with
her voice and her gestures, but nobody was there for her in that busy
commercial corridor. Some of the passers-by reportedly knew her
parents. They may even have recognized her, but we will never know
for sure. For one reason or another, they chose not to intervene, as
precious life gradually bled out from her tiny, twisted form.
And then, as if to compensate for the seven fateful minutes of total
neglect, she suddenly became the center of a firestorm of attention,
and the subject of nationwide episode of soul searching that reached
into the deepest corners of China's collective psyche. Monitory
donations poured in from across the land, perhaps even the world.
Tears of sympathy were shed on all sides of the social, economic,
ethnical, religious, and cultural divisions. Words of outrage were
spoken in many more languages than she would have been able to
count. Everybody was, at one point or another, forced to ponder over
this question: "What would I have done?"
But it was all too late. Maybe just seven minutes too late.
At 00:32 (Beijing time) on October 21, 2011, she quietly left this world,
which bestowed on her far too little concern when she needed it most,
and perhaps far too much when she was no longer aware of it.
