密歇根大学 研究生助理(GRSA) 童鞋们,为了避免多交 $400+,避免“被代表”了,
请去签名支持:

UM 2000多名全职RA,如果GEO把GSRAs纳入他们的工会系统里,每年GEO可以获得近百万
美元的easy money,而这些钱不是花在RAs的福利上(羊毛出在羊身上,但不取之于民
用之于民)。他们把钱花哪去了呢? Who knows,GEO背后有一系列不为我们所熟悉的
利益链(you know what?)。
密歇根大学待GSRAs已不薄,GEO有各种各样的非现实目标,学校从校长到教授强烈反对
GSRAs 是雇员身份(employee)。如果认定GSRAs是雇员,这会破坏原有的student-
advisor的关系,对学生求学读取学位带来复杂的影响。如果学生与教授出现关系问题
,系里和研究生院有合适的途径进行申诉;而如果引入GEO,反而让本来是内部矛盾引
发成外部掺合的不可调和的法律问题(这是很严肃的事情)。再者,GEO并不能在因为
学术原因上有什么作为。
记住GEO这么热衷于把GSRAs拉入学生工会,唯一的目的是:近百万美元的easy money!
这来自于mandatory membership fee,你成为不成为GEO成员,都得从你每个月的
paycheck 上自动扣除(robbery!)。因此,你需要参与反对GSRAs被纳入GEO工会。
有关于GEO的运作和财务问题,我从在新生orientation 被莫名其妙地“骗取”签名之
后,从每年被扣除那么多会费,到后来我去找他们要每年的财务报表而不得,就怀疑他
们的问题。关注了多年之后,这个组织绝非善类,而是靠着GSIs 获取大笔钱财,可恶
的是,这笔钱财不知去向(不是回头再用在GSIs身上)。
你手里有至关重要的一票,不要在后知后觉中被代表了!

Students Against GSRA Unionization (SAGU) is a student group of Graduate
Student Research Assistants (GSRA) at the University of Michigan who are
opposed to GSRA unionization by the Graduate Employees' Organization (GEO).

What We Believe:
Unionization is Unnecessary.
The union has not offered any specific benefits that aren't already offered
by the university.
Our university generally has our best interests in-mind. More so than the
union.
The graduate colleges already have a grievance system in place if
difficulties arise. The system has been effective. Another layer of
bureaucracy is unnecessary.
Unionization is Expensive.
The current mandatory fee for GEO members is about 1.63% of salary. GSI's
who opt-out of the union must still pay a mandatory service fee of 1.53% to
the union.
This money is paid out of students' pockets and can amount to almost $500
per year. It's not paid by the departments.
This money goes to pay for the union's administration, lawyers, and
political lobbyists at the local, state, and national level.
Remember the union reps who came around to everyone's office with their
petitions? They weren't students - they were workers hired with union dues.
Unionization is Intrusive.
The addition of a third, decision-making party creates an adversarial
relationship between students and their departments.
Unionization is Wasteful.
These actions will cost the university money and resources that could be
better spent supporting students.
What You Can Do:
GEO will have their people mobilized and active. We need to do the same. The
date of a vote isn't set yet. Stay tuned for information!
Tell you friends and colleagues. An informed student body is key.
We believe a majority of GSRAs are against unionization. All we need to do
is remain active! Spread information, and vote when the time comes.

这个帖子太片面了吧。GEO如果把GSRA纳入体系,也就有了更大bargainning power, 每
年可以涨更多工资和福利。每年是少了$400,但各种insurance+wage increase 两三年
价值就超过$400. 这个帖子纯属鼓励free-riding.

工会有其积极的一面,也有其负面的作用。你以为UM是取之不尽,用之不竭的资源吗?
当然了,能够free-riding,为何不呢?就像GEO可以一下子拿到近百万free money,为
何要白给他们呢?
所以,你说对了。
GSRAs加入不加入,GEO还是要跟学校讨价还价,学校给GEO members什么待遇,也得给
GSRAs 怎样的match. 既然如此,为何要加入?GSRAs加入GEO并不能改变他们跟学校的
bargaining能力。搞strike吗?可以。但会惹怒那些讨厌工会的教授,那些平时搞科研
吊儿郎当的人可能就会成为牺牲品,学校祭出更严格的research evaluation,达不到
program requirements的,以academic 理由踢出。不要以为GEO总是能够得逞,要知道
职权在谁手里,要怎么用。支持GEO,也要反对GEO的过度greedy的要求。
工会组织是一把双刃剑。题外话一句:美国3大被搞得这么惨,也有工会组织的一份责

就像发起反对的人说到,不反对GEO作为学生工会的存在,但是觉得GSRAs没必要加入
GEO。
GEO不会白干活,GSRAs也不傻,只不过不要轻易被人代表了。

I read your post two weeks ago on michigandaily.com on the Dibbern/Goldman
case. I don't think the GSRA unionization will realize.

Hundreds at U. of Michigan Oppose Unionization of Graduate Researchers
February 2, 2012, 2:58 pm
More than 300 faculty members and more than 400 graduate students at the
University of Michigan have signed an open letter protesting a decision by
its Board of Regents to recognize its graduate research assistants as public
employees with the right to vote on unionizing. The letter suggests that
treating the graduate researchers as employees will disrupt their
relationships with the faculty members who serve as their mentors and could
lead to students’ being held to different academic standards based on
whether they are research assistants or derive financial support for their
research from some other source. The university’s Graduate Employees’
Organization, which is leading the union drive, has responded with its own
petition objecting to efforts by faculty members or current or former
administrators to sway the unionization vote. An administrative judge is
holding hearings this week to decide whether the university’s graduate
research assistants should be thought of students or employees under state
law.
