Impotence
1) Impotence has been reported following hydrochlorothiazide use at doses of
25 mg or greater [69].
Sexual dysfunction
1) There may be some association between thiazides and decreased male sexual
function (impotence), especially if in combination with adrenergic-blocking
antihypertensive agents [180].
2) Hydrochlorothiazide may have a greater incidence of sexual dysfunction
associated with its use than prazosin. In a crossover study evaluating the
effects of both agents on sexual function, 8 to 12 subjects noted a decrease
in sexual activity during hydrochlorothiazide treatment, whereas 5 of the
12 noted a decrease during prazosin treatment as compared to baseline.
Although no differences in the objective parameters associated with REM
sleep (nocturnal penile tumescence) were noted, a greater number of patients
did report decreased libido, and decreases in buckling pressure were
detected in 4 out of 5 patients evaluated who received hydrochlorothiazide [
181].
COZAAR
Sexual dysfunction
a) Incidence: less than 1% [73]
b) Decreased libido occurred in less than 1% of patients who received
losartan potassium during clinical trials (n=1409) [73]. |
