226 | 4 Although they are volunteers, the physicians also have formal jobs in big
hospitals. Therefore, if they take you, you can set up connection; if they
like you, you can get references as well! | d****y 发帖数: 2180 | 5 It depends. If you can build a good relationship with the doctors there and
get a strong LOR, this could be the best place to work, even better than the
commercial externship and some hospital OB.

share something.
There are many types of free clinics, such as government-owned, non-profit
organization, or religion group supported...different types may have
different policies for ob. But one thing would be the same: they would like
to recruit volunteers to join them, rather than simply observers.
I knew our local free clinic (organized by CMDA) long before I reached the
stage to look for observership. But only when I was preparing for CS exam, I
found I was qualified to be a physician volunteer. As long as u are capable
, they would allow u to do anything, with the physicians' signature. Most of
the co-workers were very nice. The physicians were either family medicine
doc, or specialists from big hospitals. Their dedication of their time and
effort to the patients set a good example for me. Most of them had medical
missionary experiences. You can be touched by their warm-heartedness while
working with them. That turned out to be a very interesting experience for
me, both good for CV/LOR, and for my iv, cause I could regard myself as an
IM intern; also volunteer experience are highly regarded by Americans, as
part of the service to the community.
To my knowledge, that kind of clinic are in great need of volunteers,
especially physicians. So don't be shy to ask them for an opportunity. Keep
in mind, before the volunteer work, better to well-train yourself, and
really offer something to the group. | D******3 发帖数: 34 | 7 @rhcrc11, thanks for sharing. That seems much better than observing only if
they would like you to do something and to interact with both physicians and
patients. I observed at a famous teaching hospital but even assisting in a
procedure was disapproved.
Is ECFMG certification required or helpful to being accepted to a free
clinic? Thanks again. | d****y 发帖数: 2180 | 8 Usually free clinic needs a lot of help. Just apply to volunteer. You will
definitely be welcomed.
You will have a lot of opportunities to interact with physicians and
patients, the level of interaction depends on the policy of the state and
clinic though.

what kind of work you can do depends on your ability. That's why I highly
recommend LZ to be well prepared before having this opportunity.
